Brake Warning Signs You Shouldn’t Ignore
Brakes rarely fail without warning. Knowing what to listen and feel for can help you catch a problem before it becomes a safety issue.
- Squealing or grinding noise: A high-pitched squeal during braking typically signals worn brake pads or shoes. Grinding often means the pad material is gone and metal is contacting the rotor.
- Vibration or pulsing: A pulse in the brake pedal or steering wheel when you slow down is a common sign of rotor wear or warping.
- Soft or spongy pedal: A pedal that sinks farther than usual or feels mushy underfoot points to a brake inspection.
- Pulling to one side: A vehicle that drifts left or right under braking may have uneven pad wear or a caliper issue.
- Longer stopping distance: If you’re pressing harder than usual to reach a stop, something in the braking system warrants attention.
Any one of these signs is worth a free visual brake inspection on most vehicles. Call us at (512) 812-9468 or use our online contact form to schedule brake service at Christian Brothers Automotive Westinghouse Road. We’re here to help you get back on the road safely.
Brake Fluid & Your Anti-Lock Brake System
Brake fluid is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture from the air over time. As water content builds up, the fluid’s boiling point drops, which can reduce braking performance under repeated or heavy use. Periodic checks and a brake fluid flush when the condition warrants it help keep the system working as intended.
The anti-lock brake system (ABS) modulates brake pressure at each individual wheel during a hard or sudden stop. By preventing wheel lock-up, ABS helps you maintain steering control in an emergency. If your ABS warning light comes on, the system has flagged a fault worth diagnosing before your next long drive.
