Signs Your Vehicle’s AC Needs Attention

Catching AC trouble early can mean a simpler, less costly repair. Here are symptoms worth scheduling an inspection for:

  • Warm or only slightly cool air when the AC is set to its lowest temperature
  • Weak airflow from the vents even at the highest fan setting
  • Musty or strange odors when the AC runs, which can indicate mold or bacteria in the evaporator or ducts
  • Rattling or grinding noises when the AC turns on, which may point to a failing compressor
  • Visible moisture or leaking fluid inside or under the vehicle near AC components
  • Inconsistent cooling that comes and goes rather than holding steady

How Your Vehicle’s AC System Works

Understanding the major components helps you follow along when our technicians explain what they found during an inspection.

Compressor
The compressor pressurizes the refrigerant and circulates it through the system. It’s the most mechanically demanding component and one of the more common failure points, particularly in vehicles exposed to sustained summer heat.

Condenser
The condenser releases heat from the refrigerant to the outside air. Positioned in front of the radiator, it’s exposed to road debris that can cause physical damage over time.

Evaporator
The evaporator absorbs heat from the cabin air before it’s blown through your vents. Moisture collects on its surface, which can promote mold growth if the system isn’t properly maintained.

Refrigerant
Refrigerant is the fluid that carries heat out of your vehicle’s cabin. Low refrigerant usually points to a leak somewhere in the system rather than normal use. Annual AC inspections can identify small leaks and component wear before they become larger, more expensive repairs.
