Transmission Warning Signs Lewisville Drivers Should Know
Transmissions rarely fail without warning. Catching the early signs gives you options, and getting a diagnosis before a small problem grows often means a targeted repair rather than a full rebuild or replacement.
Watch for these symptoms:
- Rough, delayed, or hesitant gear shifts
- Grinding or clunking sounds during acceleration
- A burning smell from overheated fluid
- Gear slipping where the engine revs but vehicle speed doesn’t increase
- Red or brown fluid pooling under the vehicle
- An illuminated check engine light alongside any of the above
Drivers commuting on I-35E and Highway 121 face stop-and-go traffic and North Texas heat that both accelerate transmission fluid degradation. If any of these symptoms appear, getting the vehicle inspected promptly is one of the best ways to stay ahead of a larger repair.
Keeping Your Transmission Healthy: Maintenance Basics
Transmission fluid does three jobs at once: it lubricates moving parts, cools the system, and transfers the hydraulic pressure that controls gear changes. When fluid becomes dirty, low, or burned, internal wear accelerates and failures follow. Where a dipstick is accessible, checking fluid condition for dark color, a burnt smell, or visible contamination is a simple way to catch trouble early.
Your owner’s manual specifies service intervals for your transmission, and those intervals may be shorter if your vehicle runs in high-heat climates, frequent stop-and-go traffic, or towing applications. Automatic and manual transmissions each have distinct fluid types and maintenance requirements, so what applies to one doesn’t necessarily apply to the other.
When Professional Service Is Needed
Some transmission checks require a professional shop. Solenoid testing, hydraulic pressure checks, and electronic module scanning all depend on specialized diagnostic equipment that isn’t available for DIY. An annual transmission inspection is a widely recommended practice for catching wear on seals, filters, and fluid before small issues become larger mechanical problems.
If your vehicle is showing symptoms or it’s been a while since your last transmission service, our certified technicians can inspect, diagnose, and advise you on the right next step for your specific vehicle.

FAQs
-
Q. "What factors determine the price of transmission repair?"Many different factors go into determining costs of transmission repair. The major factor is what type of vehicle you drive. The year, make and model of the car, determine how much parts and labor will cost. Another factor is how much damage the transmission has sustained. Your transmission should last a minimum of 100,000 miles by servicing your transmission on a regular basis.
-
Q. "What does automatic transmission service include?"Fluid is first drained from the pan during an automatic transmission service. A new transmission filter is installed with a new pan gasket once the pan has been removed. Finally, fresh automatic transmission fluid (ATF) is used to refill the vehicle.
-
Q. "Is there a difference between a transmission fluid change and flush?"During a transmission fluid and filter change, it’s only the fluid in the pan that is drained and replaced with new ATF. Four to five quarts of fluid will typically be replaced in this process, while nine to thirteen quarts are replaced during a full transmission fluid flush. The difference in amounts is because the complete flush drains the entire system.
