How To Properly Maintain Your Transmission in Georgia

Every driver knows the engine oil needs to be changed regularly, but what about your transmission? It’s a complex component that’s always working and requires transmission fluid to operate correctly. The transmission shifts your car into the correct gear as you drive. The idea is to maximize torque and keep the car running as efficiently as possible. Rebuilding an automatic transmission is up there with some of the most expensive car repairs. Thankfully, transmissions rarely have to be rebuilt – if they’re taken care of.

At Christian Brothers Automotive Eagle’s Landing in Stockbridge, our goal is to help you take care of your vehicle so that you don’t need big, expensive repairs for your car or truck to keep running like new! The expert technicians at our local Stockbridge, GA auto repair shop have compiled a list of tips to help you safeguard your transmission from expensive damage. Take a look at the list below and make sure your car is well taken care of.

Check your transmission fluid

The transmission fluid is very important. It keeps the entire transmission system well lubricated so that it can perform seamlessly. A lack of fluid or old fluid can cause serious problems down the road. Most transmission fluids are bright red in color. This makes it easy to tell if you have a leak.

The process for checking the transmission fluid is different for many makes and models. On some cars, you may be able to check it with a dipstick, similar to how the engine oil is checked. However, some newer cars don’t have a dipstick and the fluid must be checked at the transmission located under the car. You can always check your owner’s manual to see what your vehicle requires. And of course, we’re always here to help!

Flush the fluid; don’t drain it

When it’s time to change your transmission fluid, there are two techniques. You can drain the fluid through the drain plug and refill it, or you can flush the entire transmission system.

We suggest choosing the system flush. Whenever you go with a simple drain and refill, only half of the transmission fluid actually gets replaced. This is because a large portion of the fluid is still in the torque converter, valve body or other parts of the transmission system. Flushing the system will pump all of the old fluid out and replace it with new, pristine transmission fluid. The flush is also quicker too!

Keep your car from overheating

A lot of transmission problems start from overheating. Towing a heavy load, driving in stop-and-go traffic during extreme temperatures, and racing are all conditions that can cause the transmission to overheat. You should also make sure your vehicle’s cooling system is working correctly to avoid any overheating situations.
