AC Warning Signs & How the System Works
Your vehicle’s AC can usually give you warning before it fails completely. Catching these signs early typically keeps the repair simpler and less costly than waiting until the system stops working entirely.
Watch for these four indicators:
- Foul or musty odor from the vents: Often points to mold or bacteria in the evaporator or a cabin air filter that needs replacement
- Reduced airflow: A noticeable change in how much air comes through the vents, even at full fan speed
- Cooling performance drop: The system running but not getting as cool as it should
- Unusual noises when the AC is on: Rattling, grinding, or clicking sounds that only appear when the system is running
A visible leak under your vehicle or refrigerant residue around AC components are also signs to bring your car in. The earlier we diagnose the problem, the more repair options you may have.
How Your Vehicle’s AC System Works
A car’s AC system doesn’t generate cold air. It removes heat from the cabin by cycling refrigerant between liquid and gas states, pulling heat out of the air before it reaches you. The compressor pressurizes the refrigerant, the condenser releases heat outside the vehicle, and the evaporator absorbs heat from the cabin air. The blower motor then pushes that cooled air through your vents.
Any one of these components can affect the whole system. Refrigerant doesn’t deplete on its own in a healthy system, so if your levels are low, there’s typically a leak that needs to be found and repaired. Cabin air filters work alongside the AC system too, and a clogged filter reduces airflow even when every other component is functioning correctly.
