| By: Christian Brothers Automotive

Whether you’re a busy student, a young professional, or a parent raising a village, this is for sure: You need a safe car. There are new drivers learning behind the wheel, uninsured drivers, texting drivers, drunk drivers, and good drivers who all have room for human error. Added to that is bad weather and cars that are improperly serviced or not serviced at all, and now we have even more potential driving hazards. Because driving comes with such unpredictability, it’s best to purchase a vehicle that has undergone various evaluations to ensure it will protect you and your passengers. It’s even better if the car you purchase is a Safety Pick.

Today, the team at Christian Brothers Automotive reviews the2023 Top Safety Picks from IIHS. Discover the criteria and see our picks below.

What Makes a Car Best in Safety?

Driving is a dangerous activity we complete every day, and with precious cargo like our little ones, pets, and selves, there’s no wonder why consumers continue to seek out the safest vehicles of the bunch. But, what makes a car best in safety?

Since 2006, theInsurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS), a nonprofit organization dedicated to reducing deaths, injuries, and property damage from vehicle crashes through research, evaluation, and educating consumers, has delivered an annual list of Top Safety Picks.

Since then, a newer classification of Top Safety Pick+ was added in 2013. For this blog, we’ll look only at those that fall into the Safety Pick+ category.

To be a Top Safety Pick+ in 2023, the vehicle must have a:

  • Good rating in IIHS’s crash tests:

  • Original moderate overlap front

  • Driver-side small overlap front

  • Passenger-side small overlap front

  • Updated side test

  • Acceptable or good headlights standard

  • Advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention tests:

  • Daytime vehicle-to-pedestrian

  • Nighttime vehicle-to-pedestrian

Through both IIHS and manufacturing processes, the results are verified and used to create a list of the safest vehicles every year. This list is published and used as a buying guide for those looking for a new set of wheels.
