Summer road trips are a great way to spend time together as a family, but on long hauls, even the most patient kiddos can start to get bored. No one enjoys the dreaded “are we there yet?,” but you can hardly blame the kiddos if you are on a particularly long trek. Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to keep them entertained so the time flies by.

Below, you will find some of our favorite ways to keep the kids entertained on a car trip. If you are heading out on a road trip this summer, be sure you have all these tips and tricks up your sleeves to keep everyone happy for the entire drive!

How to Keep Kids Entertained on a Road Trip

Play games as a family. There are so many great road trip games out there, from the classics we grew up with to many new iterations of fun. From 20 questions to I Spy and The Alphabet Game, there are tons of fun ways to get the whole car enjoying themselves on a trip!

Listen to family friendly audiobooks. Listening to an audiobook as a family is a great way to get kids’ brains going. Find something everyone can enjoy and play it over the car stereo—you can even host a miniature book club between chapters to see what each person thought!

Research fun pit stops. The beauty of a road trip is that you can really stop and explore on the way to your final destination. Researching fun pit stops along your road trip route is a great way to give everyone the chance to stretch their legs and experience something new.

Make snacks fun. Road trip snacks are always exciting, but especially so if they are a bit creative. Making cereal necklaces or popcorn garlands in advance will keep kids occupied for longer and make snacking an entire activity instead of just a bored go-to.

Create a movie theater in your backseat. If you have a car with a DVD player, play up the movie theme by bringing popcorn and small boxes of candy, so kids feel like they are having an experience instead of mindlessly watching TV. Everyone can take turns picking a movie before the trip, too!
