Our Alternator & Starter Diagnostic Process
Testing begins with an appointment and follows a documented process through inspection, review, and authorization. We don’t perform or schedule recommended repairs until you’ve reviewed the findings and approved the service.
Here’s what to expect during your visit:
- Schedule your appointment: Contact us to arrange diagnostic service for a no-start condition, warning light, or suspected electrical problem.
- Complete electrical testing: Our technicians use manufacturer-equivalent equipment to evaluate the battery, alternator, starter, wiring, and related connections.
- Digital Vehicle Inspection: We text you a report with photos and video of the inspection findings.
- Review and authorization: A service advisor explains the findings and requests your approval before work is performed or scheduled.
1. Schedule Your Appointment
Whether scheduling online or over the phone be sure and let us know what you're experiencing so we can provide fast and accurate service advice.
2. Diagnostics and Inspections

3. Digital Vehicle Inspection Report and Estimate
Following the diagnosis we will text you a digital vehicle inspection report, containing pictures and videos of our findings and recommendations.
4. Review and Approval
A service advisor will reach out to walk you through the findings and recommendations to determine how you would like to proceed, or you can approve work directly in your DVI.
5. Work Performed or Scheduled
Most work can be completed immediately, or scheduled based on parts and customer availability.
Signs of an Alternator or Starter Problem
Slow cranking, repeated clicking, or silence when you turn the key can point to a starting concern. A worn starter can resemble a weak battery, so the symptom alone isn’t enough to determine which part needs service.
Dimming lights or inconsistent electrical accessories while the engine is running can indicate an alternator problem. A dashboard battery or electrical warning light can also signal trouble involving the battery, alternator, starter, or related connections. Testing the connected components helps distinguish the source from the symptom.
Cold-Weather Starting in Colorado Springs
Colorado Springs averages roughly 160 freezing nights each year, and January’s average overnight low is near 19°F. The area also experiences several winter nights at 0°F or colder. A cold engine requires more cranking power to start.
Cold mornings can expose age-related or wear-related weakness in a battery, starter, or alternator. If your vehicle cranks slowly or starts inconsistently as temperatures fall, complete electrical testing can show which component requires attention.
Documented Findings Before You Authorize Repairs
The appropriate repair depends on what the diagnostic results reveal. Your Digital Vehicle Inspection includes photos and video, giving you a documented view of relevant findings before you make a decision.
A service advisor reviews the report with you and explains the recommended work in clear terms. Repairs are performed or scheduled only after you provide authorization. We also provide a warranty on our workmanship.
Courtesy Inspections & Shuttle Service
Every visit includes a free courtesy inspection. Along with evaluating the concern that brought you to us, our technicians can note visible maintenance or repair issues found during the inspection. You receive that information without any unauthorized work being added.
Complimentary shuttle service is available while your vehicle is being serviced. Daymen and Heather Tiffany own and operate our location, and they’re on-site for each customer’s experience. Their direct involvement provides a clear point of accountability throughout your visit.

How the Battery, Starter & Alternator Work Together
The battery, starter, and alternator perform separate jobs during the starting sequence. The battery supplies stored electrical energy, and the starter turns the engine so combustion can begin. Once the engine is running, the alternator powers electrical systems and recharges the battery.
Because these components work together, a failure in one area can appear to be a problem elsewhere. A weak alternator may leave the battery undercharged, while a worn starter may draw power without cranking the engine normally. Loose, damaged, or corroded connections can also interrupt electrical flow.
Testing the complete electrical network provides the evidence needed to distinguish a failed component from a symptom caused elsewhere. Battery testing and alternator and starter diagnostics reduce the need to rely on assumptions based on a single symptom.

FAQs
-
Q. "Why is the alternator important?"The alternator helps the battery maintain power. As the car is driving, it’s gaining power from the engine. During this time, the alternator is charging the battery. When the car stops running, the charge from the alternator allows the battery to continue providing power to the car.
-
Q. "What does the alternator do?"As an alternate source of power, the alternator helps many features in the car run. It helps your air conditioning maintain proper airflow, powers the radio, and turns on the headlights, among other things. It can also add power to the engine.
-
Q. "Where is the alternator located?"You’ll typically find the alternator near the front of the engine, bolted in with two brackets. One is adjustable (to allow for drive belt-tightening) while the other is fixed.
-
Q. "What are some signs that my starter is going bad?"Some common symptoms that your starter is going bad or is dead include: clicking or other odd noises, lights working in your car but the engine won't turn, taking more than one attempt to start, or smoke coming from the hood.
-
Q. "Do you offer a warranty?"As part of our Nice difference.® commitment to providing our customers the best auto service experience possible, we also offer a3-year/36,000-mile warranty on all the work that we do. We offer this warranty at every Christian Brothers Automotive nationwide, and it will be honored at any location, regardless of which branch did the initial work.
-
Q. "What is a Digital Vehicle Inspection?"With a complimentary Digital Vehicle Inspection (DVI) on every visit, you’ll see firsthand photos of your vehicle from under the hood. We’ll let you know if everything is functioning properly or if there are any areas of concern. You can even approve or deny our service recommendations, all straight from your smartphone, or you can, of course, give us a call and we’ll explain our findings in further detail.
