Understanding Your Vehicle’s Starting & Charging System
Knowing what your alternator and starter do makes it easier to catch problems early. Here’s what Arvada drivers should know about these systems.
What the Starter & Alternator Each Do
The starter’s job is straightforward: it cranks the engine to initiate combustion. When a starter fails, the engine may not turn over at all, or you’ll hear a rapid clicking sound when you turn the key, even though the lights and accessories still work. Smoke from under the hood or repeated failed start attempts are also signs the starter motor is struggling.
The alternator takes over once the engine is running. It recharges the battery and powers electrical components including headlights, air conditioning, and the radio. A failing alternator can allow the engine to start but may cause it to die quickly as the battery drains. Dimming or flickering headlights, a battery warning light, erratic accessory behavior, or a burning smell from the engine bay all point toward the charging system.
How the Alternator Is Built & How Long It Lasts
The alternator sits near the front of the engine and is driven by the serpentine belt. A voltage regulator inside it controls how much electricity it produces. Alternators generally last between 100,000 and 150,000 miles, though driving conditions can affect that range considerably. Catching symptoms early can help you avoid a breakdown.
Common Causes of Alternator & Starter Failure
Alternators typically fail due to worn brushes, faulty diodes, damaged bearings, or age-related wear on the internal voltage regulator. When the voltage regulator fails, the alternator may overcharge or undercharge the battery, damaging other electrical components over time. A worn or incorrectly tensioned serpentine belt can also cause the alternator to slip and produce insufficient power, and electrical overloads from aftermarket accessories add strain and heat that accelerate that wear.
Starter failures often follow a gradual pattern: grinding or clicking noises when turning the key, multiple attempts needed before the engine catches, or intermittent no-start conditions. Because a weak battery can mimic starter failure symptoms, proper diagnostics are essential before any parts are replaced.
What Our Diagnostic Process Covers
Our technicians use a scan tool to read error codes, analyze live charging system data, and perform a battery load test. We also inspect the belts, hoses, and wiring that interact with the alternator and starter. This complete picture helps us address the right component and avoid unnecessary replacements.
If you have an extended warranty, we work with all major providers. Confirm your coverage details when you schedule your appointment.

FAQs
-
Q. "Why is the alternator important?"The alternator helps the battery maintain power. As the car is driving, it’s gaining power from the engine. During this time, the alternator is charging the battery. When the car stops running, the charge from the alternator allows the battery to continue providing power to the car.
-
Q. "What does the alternator do?"As an alternate source of power, the alternator helps many features in the car run. It helps your air conditioning maintain proper airflow, powers the radio, and turns on the headlights, among other things. It can also add power to the engine.
-
Q. "Where is the alternator located?"You’ll typically find the alternator near the front of the engine, bolted in with two brackets. One is adjustable (to allow for drive belt-tightening) while the other is fixed.
-
Q. "What are some signs that my starter is going bad?"Some common symptoms that your starter is going bad or is dead include: clicking or other odd noises, lights working in your car but the engine won't turn, taking more than one attempt to start, or smoke coming from the hood.
-
Q. "Do you offer a warranty?"As part of our Nice difference.® commitment to providing our customers the best auto service experience possible, we also offer a3-year/36,000-mile warranty on all the work that we do. We offer this warranty at every Christian Brothers Automotive nationwide, and it will be honored at any location, regardless of which branch did the initial work.
-
Q. "What is a Digital Vehicle Inspection?"With a complimentary Digital Vehicle Inspection (DVI) on every visit, you’ll see firsthand photos of your vehicle from under the hood. We’ll let you know if everything is functioning properly or if there are any areas of concern. You can even approve or deny our service recommendations, all straight from your smartphone, or you can, of course, give us a call and we’ll explain our findings in further detail.
