A/C Problems in Vehicles

Car AC systems fail for a range of reasons, and the root cause isn’t always obvious from the symptoms alone. San Antonio’s extreme summer heat puts added stress on AC components, causing small leaks and weakened parts to fail faster than they would in a cooler climate. Common causes of car AC failure include:

  • Low or leaking refrigerant - refrigerant doesn’t deplete through normal use; low levels almost always point to a leak that must be located and repaired before a recharge will hold
  • Failed or failing AC compressor - the compressor pressurizes refrigerant and is one of the most common sources of AC failure
  • Clogged or damaged condenser - the condenser dissipates heat; damage or blockage from road debris prevents it from working properly
  • Leaking evaporator - evaporator leaks are harder to detect and often produce a musty odor from the vents
  • Blocked or dirty cabin air filter - a clogged filter restricts airflow and reduces cooling effectiveness
  • Electrical faults - pressure switches, relays, and the control module can all cause the AC to stop engaging or behave inconsistently
  • Damaged AC hoses or fittings - cracks or worn connections allow refrigerant to escape and introduce air into the system

When refrigerant is low, our technicians fit the system with the correct refrigerant level and address whatever caused it to drop. Recharging your AC with store-bought DIY cans isn’t recommended. Adding refrigerant incorrectly or unnecessarily can seriously damage your AC system, and without fixing the underlying leak, the problem can return.

If your AC is struggling, it usually gives you warning signs before it fails completely. Signs that indicate an AC problem include:

  • Warm or weak airflow from vents - the most common complaint, and can point to refrigerant loss, compressor problems, or a blocked condenser
  • AC that cools at highway speed but not at idle - often a sign of condenser airflow issues or a low refrigerant charge
  • Musty or mildew smell from vents - typically caused by bacteria or mold growth on the evaporator, which can develop when moisture isn’t draining properly
  • Rattling or buzzing near the compressor - unusual sounds when the AC engages can indicate a failing compressor clutch or debris in the system
  • Visible refrigerant residue around AC components - oily staining near fittings and hoses points to an active leak
  • Intermittent cooling - an AC that works sometimes and not others often has an electrical fault or a pressure switch problem
