Understanding Your Alternator & Starter
The starter motor engages the engine when you turn the key or press the ignition button. When its internal components wear out, whether brushes, the solenoid, or an electrical connection, the engine won’t crank.
The alternator converts the engine’s mechanical energy into electricity. While the vehicle is running, it recharges the battery and powers everything from headlights to climate controls. When the alternator fails, the automotive electrical system draws down the battery’s stored charge until the engine stalls.
A dead battery, a failing alternator, and a worn starter can all produce similar symptoms, which is why voltage output testing and full diagnostics are the only reliable way to identify which component is actually at fault. Starters commonly fail due to worn brushes or a faulty solenoid. Alternators often fail from worn diodes, a failing drive belt, or bearing failure. Our technicians trace the source before recommending any repair.
Irving Driving Conditions & How We Handle Your Service
The Dallas-Fort Worth climate puts real strain on charging systems. Sustained high temperatures shorten the service life of drive belts, electrical connectors, and the battery cells the alternator depends on. Frequent stop-and-go traffic on State Highway 114 and the President George Bush Turnpike puts repetitive demand on the starter and keeps the charging system working hard during short trips where the battery may not fully recharge. The Irving and Valley Ranch area also sits on expansive clay soil that swells and contracts with moisture changes, stressing wiring connections and mounting hardware over time. Together, these conditions mean Irving drivers often see alternator and starter wear earlier than general manufacturer estimates suggest.

FAQs
-
Q. "Why is the alternator important?"The alternator helps the battery maintain power. As the car is driving, it’s gaining power from the engine. During this time, the alternator is charging the battery. When the car stops running, the charge from the alternator allows the battery to continue providing power to the car.
-
Q. "What does the alternator do?"As an alternate source of power, the alternator helps many features in the car run. It helps your air conditioning maintain proper airflow, powers the radio, and turns on the headlights, among other things. It can also add power to the engine.
-
Q. "Where is the alternator located?"You’ll typically find the alternator near the front of the engine, bolted in with two brackets. One is adjustable (to allow for drive belt-tightening) while the other is fixed.
-
Q. "What are some signs that my starter is going bad?"Some common symptoms that your starter is going bad or is dead include: clicking or other odd noises, lights working in your car but the engine won't turn, taking more than one attempt to start, or smoke coming from the hood.
