What Your Alternator & Starter Actually Do
The alternator keeps your battery charged while the engine runs and powers everything from your headlights and air conditioning to your windshield wipers and radio. If it fails, the engine may start normally but can die shortly after because the battery is no longer being replenished.
The starter’s job is simpler but just as critical: it cranks the engine when you turn the key. Starter failure can stem from an electrical fault, mechanical wear, or a complete breakdown of the starter motor. When it goes, the engine may not turn over regardless of how much charge the battery holds.
Signs Your Alternator or Starter Needs Attention
Catching a problem early can be the difference between a scheduled repair and a roadside breakdown. Peoria’s heat speeds up the chemical reactions inside batteries and adds load to the alternator, so symptoms can appear more suddenly here than in cooler climates. When something feels off, professional diagnostics can determine which component needs attention.
Alternator Warning Signs
Dim or flickering headlights, a dashboard battery or charging warning light, and electrical accessories behaving erratically are common signs of charging system failure. A battery that drains repeatedly even after a charge often points to the alternator rather than the battery itself.
Starter Warning Signs
Starter trouble shows up differently: a clicking or grinding noise when you turn the key, an engine that won’t crank even though the lights work fine, or an engine that takes several attempts to turn over.
Our Alternator & Starter Diagnostic & Repair Process
The alternator sits near the front of the engine, typically mounted on brackets that allow for drive belt tension adjustment. That position means wear on the serpentine belt can affect alternator performance, and our certified technicians check related components during every inspection. Driving on a failing alternator can damage the battery and other electrical components, so catching the problem early matters.
Diagnostics & Inspection
We use the same diagnostic equipment manufacturers use to identify the exact issue before any repair recommendation is made. Once diagnostics are complete, we send a Digital Vehicle Inspection (DVI) report with photos and video directly to your phone. You review the findings, approve what you want addressed, and we get to work.
Repairs & Replacements
For alternator replacement in Peoria and other alternator and starter services, most work can be completed within the same appointment, though timing varies by vehicle make, model, and parts availability. Our certified technicians are experienced across a wide range of makes and models, including vehicles from major American and foreign automakers. All replacements use high-quality OEM parts, and every repair is backed by our Nice difference.® warranty.
Ongoing Electrical System Health
Routine electrical system checks covering the battery, alternator, and connections can identify wear before it becomes a breakdown. We include a complimentary courtesy inspection with every visit so you leave with a clear picture of where your vehicle stands.

FAQs
-
Q. "Why is the alternator important?"The alternator helps the battery maintain power. As the car is driving, it’s gaining power from the engine. During this time, the alternator is charging the battery. When the car stops running, the charge from the alternator allows the battery to continue providing power to the car.
-
Q. "What does the alternator do?"As an alternate source of power, the alternator helps many features in the car run. It helps your air conditioning maintain proper airflow, powers the radio, and turns on the headlights, among other things. It can also add power to the engine.
-
Q. "Where is the alternator located?"You’ll typically find the alternator near the front of the engine, bolted in with two brackets. One is adjustable (to allow for drive belt-tightening) while the other is fixed.
-
Q. "What are some signs that my starter is going bad?"Some common symptoms that your starter is going bad or is dead include: clicking or other odd noises, lights working in your car but the engine won't turn, taking more than one attempt to start, or smoke coming from the hood.
-
Q. "Do you offer a warranty?"As part of our Nice difference.® commitment to providing our customers the best auto service experience possible, we also offer a3-year/36,000-mile warranty on all the work that we do. We offer this warranty at every Christian Brothers Automotive nationwide, and it will be honored at any location, regardless of which branch did the initial work.
-
Q. "What is a Digital Vehicle Inspection?"With a complimentary Digital Vehicle Inspection (DVI) on every visit, you’ll see firsthand photos of your vehicle from under the hood. We’ll let you know if everything is functioning properly or if there are any areas of concern. You can even approve or deny our service recommendations, all straight from your smartphone, or you can, of course, give us a call and we’ll explain our findings in further detail.
