After every diagnostic, our technicians send a Digital Vehicle Inspection report with photos and videos directly to you. You see the condition of your cooling system components the same way our technicians do. A service advisor walks you through the findings and answers questions before any work is approved. You’re never asked to sign off on a repair you haven’t seen and understood.
What You Should Know About Your Cooling System
What a Coolant Flush Does
Your engine’s cooling system keeps combustion heat from destroying internal components. It circulates coolant (antifreeze) through passages around the engine and through the radiator, where heat dissipates before the fluid cycles back. Antifreeze is typically a mixture of ethylene or propylene glycol with de-mineralized water, and it degrades over time, losing its ability to protect against rust, scale, and temperature extremes.
A coolant flush pushes fresh antifreeze through the entire cooling system to clear out old fluid and the contaminants that accumulate with it. Here’s how we approach it:
- Full evacuation: All old coolant is removed so new antifreeze doesn’t mix with degraded fluid
- Conditioner addition: Conditioners are added to prevent rust and scale buildup before new antifreeze goes in
- Fresh antifreeze refill: The system receives new fluid formulated for your vehicle’s requirements
How often you need a coolant flush depends on your vehicle and the type of antifreeze it uses. Check your owner’s manual for the interval your manufacturer specifies. Between flushes, antifreeze levels should be checked and corrected as needed because coolant doesn’t last the lifetime of the vehicle.
Warning Signs Your Cooling System Needs Attention
Cooling system problems rarely announce themselves all at once. Knowing what to look for gives you time to schedule service before a minor issue becomes an engine failure. The four most common problems are water pump failure, leaky radiator hoses, radiator leaks, and thermostat failure.
- Temperature gauge rising toward red: The most urgent signal. It can point to thermostat failure, a failing water pump, or low coolant from a leak. Stop driving and seek service.
- Coolant puddles under the vehicle: A wet spot with a greenish, orange, or pink tint often indicates a leaking radiator or deteriorated hose.
- Sweet smell near the engine or from vents: Antifreeze has a distinctive sweet odor. If you notice it inside or outside the cabin, a coolant leak is likely.
- Temperature warning light or check engine light: Dashboard alerts triggered by temperature sensors are a signal to stop driving and schedule an inspection immediately.
Driving on an overheating engine, even for a short distance, can warp cylinder heads, blow head gaskets, or cause damage that can far exceed the cost of the original repair.
Common Questions About Cooling System Service
What happens if there isn’t enough coolant in my vehicle?
Low coolant can trigger dashboard warning lights, cause the engine to overheat, and in serious cases result in engine shutdown. Coolant levels should be checked periodically and corrected before the system runs low.
Does the cooling system affect my vehicle’s air conditioning?
Not directly. The cooling system regulates engine temperature through coolant flow, while your vehicle’s air conditioning manages cabin comfort through a separate refrigerant circuit. They use different fluids and serve distinct functions, though a severely overheating engine can affect overall vehicle operation.
What are the most common cooling system problems?
Water pump failure, leaky radiator hoses, radiator leaks, and thermostat failure account for most cooling system repairs. A Digital Vehicle Inspection identifies which component is involved and documents the condition for your review.
Is my repair covered by a warranty?
