Our Alternator & Starter Service Process
We separate diagnosis from repair approval, so you receive the inspection findings and estimate before deciding whether to proceed.
The service process includes:
- Schedule an appointment: Choose a time to bring in your vehicle for diagnostics and inspection.
- Test the affected systems: Our technicians use manufacturer-level equipment to assess the starting and electrical concern.
- Review documented findings: We text you a digital inspection report with photos or videos and an estimate.
- Approve recommended work: Review the recommendation by phone or through the digital inspection report.
- Complete the service: Once approved, we perform the work or schedule it for an agreed time.
1. Schedule Your Appointment
Whether scheduling online or over the phone be sure and let us know what you're experiencing so we can provide fast and accurate service advice.
2. Diagnostics and Inspections
Drop off your vehicle and the shop will get to work with inspections and diagnostics using the same equipment as the manufacturers to determine issues and next steps.
3. Digital Vehicle Inspection Report and Estimate
Following the diagnosis we will text you a digital vehicle inspection report, containing pictures and videos of our findings and recommendations.
4. Review and Approval
A service advisor will reach out to walk you through the findings and recommendations to determine how you would like to proceed, or you can approve work directly in your DVI.
5. Work Performed or Scheduled
Most work can be completed immediately, or scheduled based on parts and customer availability.

What Alternator & Starter Replacement Involves
Replacement begins only after testing identifies the failed component. Diagnosis helps distinguish a defective alternator or starter from a weak battery, damaged wiring, poor connections, or another issue producing similar symptoms.
Alternator Replacement:
We disconnect the battery before removing the drive belt and electrical connections. We then unfasten the alternator from its mounting points and install the replacement. Post-repair testing verifies that the alternator produces the correct output.
Starter Replacement:
We begin by disconnecting the battery, followed by the starter’s electrical connections. We remove the unit from its mounting points and install the replacement. Testing afterward confirms that the vehicle starts and the repaired system performs correctly under operating conditions.
Signs of Starter or Alternator Trouble
Starter and alternator failures can both leave a vehicle unable to start, but their warning signs often differ. What happens before and during the problem gives our technicians useful diagnostic context.
Common symptoms include:
- Slow cranking or clicking: A failing starter may turn the engine slowly or produce a no-crank condition while dashboard lights and electrical accessories continue working normally.
- Battery warning light: A warning light that appears while driving can indicate an alternator or charging system concern.
- Changing electrical performance: Dimming or flickering lights and accessories that cut out can signal inadequate alternator output.
- Unusual sounds or odors: Grinding, whining, or a burning-rubber smell can accompany alternator or belt trouble.
- Repeated failure after a jump: A vehicle that starts with a jump and dies again shortly afterward may have an alternator problem rather than a battery that was simply low.

Cold-Weather Starting & Charging Problems
Cold weather reduces battery performance, increasing the alternator’s workload as it recharges the battery. It typically takes about 30 minutes or more of driving for an alternator to recharge a battery, and winter conditions can extend that time.
A squealing noise under the hood during cold weather commonly comes from a slipping alternator belt. Cold rubber may grip the pulley less effectively until it warms. Repeated no-crank symptoms, charging warning lights, or loss of electrical accessories warrant diagnosis before the vehicle becomes unable to start.

FAQs
-
Q. "Why is the alternator important?"The alternator helps the battery maintain power. As the car is driving, it’s gaining power from the engine. During this time, the alternator is charging the battery. When the car stops running, the charge from the alternator allows the battery to continue providing power to the car.
-
Q. "What does the alternator do?"As an alternate source of power, the alternator helps many features in the car run. It helps your air conditioning maintain proper airflow, powers the radio, and turns on the headlights, among other things. It can also add power to the engine.
-
Q. "Where is the alternator located?"You’ll typically find the alternator near the front of the engine, bolted in with two brackets. One is adjustable (to allow for drive belt-tightening) while the other is fixed.
-
Q. "What are some signs that my starter is going bad?"Some common symptoms that your starter is going bad or is dead include: clicking or other odd noises, lights working in your car but the engine won't turn, taking more than one attempt to start, or smoke coming from the hood.
-
Q. "Do you offer a warranty?"As part of our Nice difference.® commitment to providing our customers the best auto service experience possible, we also offer a3-year/36,000-mile warranty on all the work that we do. We offer this warranty at every Christian Brothers Automotive nationwide, and it will be honored at any location, regardless of which branch did the initial work.
-
Q. "What is a Digital Vehicle Inspection?"With a complimentary Digital Vehicle Inspection (DVI) on every visit, you’ll see firsthand photos of your vehicle from under the hood. We’ll let you know if everything is functioning properly or if there are any areas of concern. You can even approve or deny our service recommendations, all straight from your smartphone, or you can, of course, give us a call and we’ll explain our findings in further detail.
