The Importance of Transmission Health
The transmission is the bridge between your engine and your drive wheels. It's an intricate network of moving parts that requires precise lubrication to function properly. Transmission fluid is the lifeblood of this system. It serves three main functions: it lubricates the components to prevent metal-on-metal friction, it cools the system to prevent overheating, and it transmits hydraulic pressure to facilitate gear changes.
Over time and with regular use, transmission fluid begins to degrade. It can become contaminated with tiny metal shavings and debris from normal wear and tear, and it loses its ability to effectively lubricate and cool the system. This breakdown of the fluid leads to excessive heat, which is the primary cause of transmission damage. A compromised transmission can lead to slipping gears, delayed shifting, or a complete failure, all of which result in expensive repairs. Proactive maintenance is key to avoiding these costly problems and extending the life of your vehicle.
How We Care for Your Transmission
At Christian Brothers Automotive Space Center, our transmission experts recommend a full transmission fluid exchange every 50,000 miles. While this may be more frequent than some factory-recommended intervals, it's a critical preventative measure that accounts for the demands of daily driving. The heat generated during stop-and-go traffic and other typical urban driving conditions in Houston can accelerate the degradation of transmission fluid. A complete fluid exchange is a great way to protect your investment and maintain your car's performance.
When you bring your vehicle to us for a transmission service, we perform a comprehensive fluid flush, which removes all the old, contaminated fluid from the system, not just what's in the pan. We use specialized equipment to ensure the entire system is clean before refilling it with premium-quality, new fluid. Our technicians use a Digital Vehicle Inspection (DVI) process to show you exactly what's going on with your car. This includes photos and videos of our findings, so you can see the condition of your transmission fluid and other components for yourself. We believe in complete transparency and will never proceed with a repair without your full approval.
For all your transmission needs, you can depend on our expert team in Houston to provide honest, reliable, and high-quality service. Our goal is to earn your trust and become your partner in vehicle maintenance, keeping your car running smoothly and safely for many years to come.

FAQs
-
Q. "What factors determine the price of transmission repair?"Many different factors go into determining costs of transmission repair. The major factor is what type of vehicle you drive. The year, make and model of the car, determine how much parts and labor will cost. Another factor is how much damage the transmission has sustained. Your transmission should last a minimum of 100,000 miles by servicing your transmission on a regular basis.
-
Q. "What does automatic transmission service include?"Fluid is first drained from the pan during an automatic transmission service. A new transmission filter is installed with a new pan gasket once the pan has been removed. Finally, fresh automatic transmission fluid (ATF) is used to refill the vehicle.
-
Q. "Is there a difference between a transmission fluid change and flush?"During a transmission fluid and filter change, it’s only the fluid in the pan that is drained and replaced with new ATF. Four to five quarts of fluid will typically be replaced in this process, while nine to thirteen quarts are replaced during a full transmission fluid flush. The difference in amounts is because the complete flush drains the entire system.
