Accurate Diagnosis Before Any Repair
Misdiagnosing a charging or starting problem means replacing parts that didn’t need replacing. Our technicians use manufacturer-equivalent equipment to pinpoint the root cause, whether that’s a failing alternator, a bad starter, or a battery that has simply reached the end of its life. Each failure presents differently and requires a different repair.
After the inspection, we send you a Digital Vehicle Inspection Report with photos and videos of our findings. You review it on your smartphone and approve or decline the work before anything is done. Your service advisor is available by phone if you have questions. No surprises, no pressure.
Warning Signs Your Alternator or Starter May Be Failing
Catching these symptoms early gives you time to schedule a diagnosis before a breakdown occurs. Florida’s heat and humidity accelerate wear on electrical components, so periodic inspection matters here more than in cooler climates.
Alternator Warning Signs
A failing alternator may let the engine start but then lose power shortly after, as the battery drains without being recharged. Watch for:
- Dim or flickering headlights
- Battery warning light on the dashboard
- Electrical accessories behaving erratically: windows, radio, or A/C acting up
- A battery that repeatedly dies even though it’s relatively new
- Whining or grinding noises near the engine
- The engine starts but stalls shortly after because the alternator is no longer maintaining the battery’s charge
Starter Warning Signs
A failing starter typically prevents the engine from cranking at all, even when the battery is fully charged. Watch for:
- A single click or no response when you turn the key
- The engine cranks slowly or not at all
- Lights and accessories work normally, but the engine won’t turn over
- Smoke from under the hood when attempting to start
How the Alternator, Starter, & Battery Work Together
These three components form your vehicle’s starting and charging system. The starter draws power from the battery to crank the engine when you turn the ignition. Once the engine is running, the alternator takes over: it converts mechanical energy into electricity, recharges the battery, and powers everything from the headlights and windshield wipers to the A/C and radio.
If the alternator fails, the battery is no longer being recharged while the engine runs. The car may start normally at first, but the battery drains until all electrical systems lose power. If the starter fails, the engine may not crank at all, even with a fully charged battery. A proper charging system diagnosis is what determines which component is actually at fault.
On average, starters and alternators last between 6 and 10 years, or roughly 80,000 to 150,000 miles, depending on driving conditions and maintenance history. Serpentine belt condition also affects alternator performance, which is why we inspect the belt as part of a complete evaluation.

FAQs
-
Q. "Why is the alternator important?"The alternator helps the battery maintain power. As the car is driving, it’s gaining power from the engine. During this time, the alternator is charging the battery. When the car stops running, the charge from the alternator allows the battery to continue providing power to the car.
-
Q. "What does the alternator do?"As an alternate source of power, the alternator helps many features in the car run. It helps your air conditioning maintain proper airflow, powers the radio, and turns on the headlights, among other things. It can also add power to the engine.
-
Q. "Where is the alternator located?"You’ll typically find the alternator near the front of the engine, bolted in with two brackets. One is adjustable (to allow for drive belt-tightening) while the other is fixed.
-
Q. "What are some signs that my starter is going bad?"Some common symptoms that your starter is going bad or is dead include: clicking or other odd noises, lights working in your car but the engine won't turn, taking more than one attempt to start, or smoke coming from the hood.
-
Q. "Do you offer a warranty?"As part of our Nice difference.® commitment to providing our customers the best auto service experience possible, we also offer a3-year/36,000-mile warranty on all the work that we do. We offer this warranty at every Christian Brothers Automotive nationwide, and it will be honored at any location, regardless of which branch did the initial work.
