How Alternator & Starter Service Works at Our Shop
Starting and charging problems rarely follow a simple script, so our process is built to identify the real cause first and move from there.
- Schedule and describe your symptoms: When you book an appointment, let us know what you’re experiencing. Clicking sounds, slow cranks, warning lights, or an engine that dies shortly after starting all help us direct the diagnostic.
- Diagnostic inspection: Your vehicle undergoes a comprehensive inspection using manufacturer-level diagnostic equipment. Findings are documented in a Digital Vehicle Inspection report with photos and video so you can see exactly what our technicians found.
- Review before any work begins: A service advisor walks you through the inspection results, the recommended repair, the parts involved, and the expected turnaround before we touch anything. Approved work is completed the same day when parts and scheduling allow.

What the Alternator Actually Does
Most drivers know the battery starts the car, but the alternator keeps it running. While the engine is on, the alternator continuously recharges the battery and powers electrical components like headlights and windshield wipers. A failing alternator can still let the engine start, but without a maintained charge, it may stall shortly after. If your battery warning light comes on while driving, the alternator is usually the first component worth inspecting.
Starter vs. Alternator vs. Battery: Telling the Difference
A car that won’t start is frustrating, and the battery is usually the first thing drivers suspect. But the starter motor and alternator can be the cause as well. The starter is what mechanically cranks the engine when you turn the key. When it begins to fail, you might hear a single click or rapid clicking, notice the lights working while the engine refuses to turn over, need multiple attempts before the engine catches, or, in more advanced cases, see smoke from under the hood.
Cold temperatures make the picture even less clear. Winter weather adds strain to both the starting and charging systems, and a component that’s borderline in October may give out entirely by January. That’s why we don’t guess: a proper diagnostic confirms the failing part so you’re not replacing components that didn’t need replacing.
If you’re dealing with any of these symptoms, call us at (267) 651-9814 or use our online contact form to schedule service. Our complimentary shuttle is available so you can keep your day moving while your vehicle is in the shop.
When the Cause Isn’t Immediately Clear
Starting and charging symptoms can overlap, which is why we run a comprehensive inspection before drawing any conclusions. Once the exact cause is confirmed, we walk you through the recommended solution, the cost, the parts involved, and how long the repair should take. No work begins until you’ve reviewed and approved the plan.

FAQs
-
Q. "Why is the alternator important?"The alternator helps the battery maintain power. As the car is driving, it’s gaining power from the engine. During this time, the alternator is charging the battery. When the car stops running, the charge from the alternator allows the battery to continue providing power to the car.
-
Q. "What does the alternator do?"As an alternate source of power, the alternator helps many features in the car run. It helps your air conditioning maintain proper airflow, powers the radio, and turns on the headlights, among other things. It can also add power to the engine.
-
Q. "Where is the alternator located?"You’ll typically find the alternator near the front of the engine, bolted in with two brackets. One is adjustable (to allow for drive belt-tightening) while the other is fixed.
-
Q. "What are some signs that my starter is going bad?"Some common symptoms that your starter is going bad or is dead include: clicking or other odd noises, lights working in your car but the engine won't turn, taking more than one attempt to start, or smoke coming from the hood.
-
Q. "Do you offer a warranty?"As part of our Nice difference.® commitment to providing our customers the best auto service experience possible, we also offer a3-year/36,000-mile warranty on all the work that we do.
