From Dashboard Warning to Confident Answer
A steady check engine light means you can drive to us soon. A flashing light, often caused by an engine misfire, can damage the catalytic converter if you keep driving. Either way, here’s what happens when you bring your vehicle in.
- We scan and interpret: Our technicians connect tools to your vehicle’s onboard diagnostics system and read the full set of stored codes and live data, going beyond basic OBD scanner trouble codes to identify the actual issue.
- We explain what we found: We walk you through the findings in plain language, no technical jargon. You’ll understand what triggered the light and why it matters before any work begins.
- We discuss your options: Our technicians go over all repair possibilities with you first. Nothing moves forward until you decide.

What Could Be Triggering Your Check Engine Light?
The causes range from something as minor as a loose gas cap to a failing sensor to more serious engine or emissions problems. Knowing the difference matters for deciding how quickly to act.
Common Causes & What the Light’s Behavior Tells You
Several issues commonly trigger a check engine light. A loose or damaged gas cap can cause an evaporative emissions leak, though it often takes a few drive cycles before the light comes on. A failing oxygen sensor affects fuel trim and emissions. Faulty ignition coils or spark plugs can produce an engine misfire. Catalytic converter problems often follow other deferred repairs.
The light’s behavior signals urgency. A steady light means something needs attention soon, but the vehicle is generally safe to drive to a shop. A flashing light points to an active misfire or serious fault. Pull over and call us rather than continuing to drive.

When a Code Points One Way but the Problem Is Somewhere Else
Diagnostic code readers show which system logged a fault, but a single code can have multiple root causes. A code tied to an oxygen sensor reading might actually trace back to a wiring issue, a damaged connector, or a small exhaust leak upstream of the sensor. Replacing the sensor in that case wouldn’t fix anything. That’s why interpreting codes alongside live data and a physical inspection produces a real diagnosis rather than a parts guess.
Is It Safe to Keep Driving?
It depends on what else is happening. A check engine light with no other symptoms and normal gauges is lower urgency. A check engine light alongside rough idle, hesitation, loss of power, or unusual smells is a different situation. A flashing light combined with any performance change is a reason to stop and have the vehicle towed to our shop rather than driven further.

FAQs
-
Q. "What is the difference between a steadily lit and a flashing check engine light?"A steadily lit light means that a sensor is sending a signal to your vehicle's computer that something is wrong or it could simply mean that the sensor is out. If your check engine light is flashing, however, that means there is a serious issue and you should stop driving immediately.
-
Q. "Why is my check engine light on but nothing seems to be wrong with my vehicle?"If nothing within your vehicle stands out, then it is possible that it is just a minor issue such as a loose gas cap or a bad O2 sensor. It is still recommended to see a mechanic if the light doesn't disappear to check for any larger issues.
-

-
Q. "What to do if your check engine light turns on?"We recommend heading to your local auto shop as soon as you are able. This is typically a sign that there is an abnormality within your engine.
-
Q. "Is it safe to drive your car when the check engine light is on?"It depends. If you are experiencing other noticeable issues with your vehicle, it may be best to pull over. Otherwise, it is typically okay to drive to your local auto shop. You will want to get this checked sooner rather than later to avoid being stranded with a broken-down car.
