What Sets Our Alternator & Starter Service Apart
Parts stores can run a quick test on your battery or alternator, but they can’t diagnose a multi-component charging system or replace what’s failing. Dealerships can, but they’re limited to one brand. We service every make and model with manufacturer-quality equipment, and we back the work with our Nice difference.® warranty: 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes last. That warranty is honored at any Christian Brothers Automotive location nationwide, so you’re covered even when you’re traveling.
Every visit includes a complimentary Digital Vehicle Inspection (DVI). Our technicians photograph and video their findings and send the report directly to your smartphone. You can approve or decline any recommendation right from your phone, or call us to talk it through. A service advisor reviews everything with you before a single repair begins. There are no surprises on the bill and no pressure to approve work you don’t understand.
If your vehicle needs to stay with us, our complimentary shuttle service keeps you moving while we work.
Alternator vs. Starter: What Each Component Does
These two components are often confused because both can produce a no-start situation. They do different jobs, and understanding the difference helps you describe what you’re experiencing when you call us.
The Starter
The starter motor cranks the engine mechanically when you turn the key or push the start button. A failing starter typically announces itself in one of a few ways: a single loud click with no engine crank, an engine that turns over very slowly, repeated attempts needed before the engine catches, or, in some cases, visible smoke from under the hood. If your interior lights are working but the engine won’t turn over, the starter is a likely candidate.
The Alternator
The alternator recharges the battery while the engine runs and powers your electrical accessories, including headlights, windshield wipers, and the radio. A failing alternator may allow the vehicle to start normally but cause it to stall as the battery loses charge. Common signs include dim or flickering headlights, a battery or charging warning light on the dashboard, electrical accessories behaving erratically, and a battery that keeps dying despite being relatively new.
Because a failing alternator and a dead battery can produce nearly identical symptoms, professional diagnostics matter. Replacing the battery without testing the alternator often leads to the same problem a few weeks later. Texas heat and the highway driving patterns common in the Rockwall area can accelerate wear on both components, making periodic charging system checks a worthwhile part of vehicle maintenance.
Our Diagnostic & Repair Process
When your vehicle arrives, our technicians perform a comprehensive charging system inspection that tests battery condition, alternator output, and starter draw together. This tells us which component requires service rather than which one to guess at first. We use the same diagnostic equipment manufacturers use, so the findings are accurate.
After diagnosis, we send you a Digital Vehicle Inspection report by text with photos and videos of what we found and what we recommend. You review it on your own time, approve what you want done, and we get to work. Most alternator and starter replacements are completed within a few hours, though the exact time depends on your vehicle’s make and model. We give you a clear time estimate after diagnosis so you can plan your day.
Common Questions About Alternator & Starter Service
Our ASE-certified technicians service all makes and models, and Christian Brothers Automotive Rockwall has been providing reliable auto repair for over 40 years. The questions below cover what drivers most commonly ask before scheduling.
Why does the alternator matter so much?
The alternator keeps the battery charged while the engine is running and powers your vehicle’s electrical systems. Without a functioning alternator, the battery drains during operation and the vehicle can eventually stall, even if it started fine.
What are signs a starter is going bad?
Clicking sounds when turning the key, an engine that won’t crank despite working interior lights, needing several attempts to start, or smoke from the engine bay can all point to starter trouble. A diagnostic inspection confirms which component is actually at fault.
How long does alternator or starter replacement take?
Most replacements are completed within a few hours, depending on the vehicle make and model. We can give you a clear estimate after the initial diagnosis.
Does your warranty cover this work?
Yes. Alternator and starter repairs and replacements are covered by our Nice difference.® warranty: 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever comes last, honored at any Christian Brothers Automotive location nationwide.
Can I use an extended vehicle warranty for this repair?
Extended warranty coverage varies by carrier and plan. When you schedule, let us know you have coverage and we can discuss what your plan may include.
What is a Digital Vehicle Inspection?
A Digital Vehicle Inspection (DVI) is a complimentary inspection we perform on every visit. Our technicians document their findings with photos and videos and send the report to your smartphone so you can see exactly what they see and make informed decisions about your vehicle.

FAQs
-
Q. "Why is the alternator important?"The alternator helps the battery maintain power. As the car is driving, it’s gaining power from the engine. During this time, the alternator is charging the battery. When the car stops running, the charge from the alternator allows the battery to continue providing power to the car.
-
Q. "What does the alternator do?"As an alternate source of power, the alternator helps many features in the car run. It helps your air conditioning maintain proper airflow, powers the radio, and turns on the headlights, among other things. It can also add power to the engine.
-
Q. "Where is the alternator located?"You’ll typically find the alternator near the front of the engine, bolted in with two brackets. One is adjustable (to allow for drive belt-tightening) while the other is fixed.
-
Q. "What are some signs that my starter is going bad?"Some common symptoms that your starter is going bad or is dead include: clicking or other odd noises, lights working in your car but the engine won't turn, taking more than one attempt to start, or smoke coming from the hood.
-
Q. "Do you offer a warranty?"As part of our Nice difference.® commitment to providing our customers the best auto service experience possible, we also offer a3-year/36,000-mile warranty on all the work that we do. We offer this warranty at every Christian Brothers Automotive nationwide, and it will be honored at any location, regardless of which branch did the initial work.
-
Q. "What is a Digital Vehicle Inspection?"With a complimentary Digital Vehicle Inspection (DVI) on every visit, you’ll see firsthand photos of your vehicle from under the hood. We’ll let you know if everything is functioning properly or if there are any areas of concern. You can even approve or deny our service recommendations, all straight from your smartphone, or you can, of course, give us a call and we’ll explain our findings in further detail.
