How Our Check Engine Light Service Works
We designed our process to be transparent and low-stress from the moment you schedule through the moment you approve the repair. Here is what to expect when you bring your vehicle to us.
1. Schedule Your Appointment
Whether scheduling online or over the phone be sure and let us know what you're experiencing so we can provide fast and accurate service advice.
2. Diagnostics and Inspections
Drop off your vehicle and the shop will get to work with inspections and diagnostics using the same equipment as the manufacturers to determine issues and next steps.
3. Digital Vehicle Inspection Report and Estimate
Following the diagnosis we will text you a digital vehicle inspection report, containing pictures and videos of our findings and recommendations.
4. Review and Approval
A service advisor will reach out to walk you through the findings and recommendations to determine how you would like to proceed, or you can approve work directly in your DVI.
5. Work Performed or Scheduled
Most work can be completed immediately, or scheduled based on parts and customer availability.
You Approve It Before We Do It
After our Full Service Diagnostic Testing is complete, we explain exactly what we found and what we recommend in plain language. You receive a written estimate and give your approval before any work begins. Combined with our 3-year/36,000-mile warranty on all work performed, you can move forward knowing the repair is done carefully and covered if anything changes later.
What Triggers a Check Engine Light
The check engine light activates when your vehicle’s onboard computer detects a fault somewhere in the engine, emissions system, or a connected component. The tricky part is that a single trouble code can point to several different root causes, which is why guessing and replacing parts rarely solves the problem. Professional diagnostic testing identifies the actual fault.
Common causes we see in Prattville vehicles include:
- Loose or faulty gas cap: One of the most frequent triggers, and often the simplest fix. A missing or worn cap lets fuel vapors escape and trips an emissions code.
- Oxygen sensor failure: A failing oxygen sensor causes the engine to burn more fuel than it should and, if left unaddressed, can damage the catalytic converter over time.
- Catalytic converter problems: A failing catalytic converter affects vehicle emissions and generates check engine codes. Delaying diagnosis tends to raise the repair cost significantly.
- Worn or fouled spark plugs: Bad spark plugs cause engine misfires, rough idle, and reduced fuel economy, all of which can trigger a check engine light.
- Mass airflow sensor faults: A dirty or failing mass airflow sensor disrupts the air-fuel mixture and commonly triggers diagnostic trouble codes.
Flashing vs. Solid Check Engine Light
Not every check engine light carries the same urgency. A steadily lit light means a sensor has detected a fault; you can generally drive a short distance to our shop, but the vehicle should be diagnosed promptly before the issue worsens.
A flashing check engine light is different. It typically signals an active engine misfire severe enough to damage the catalytic converter with continued driving. If your light is flashing, minimize driving and bring the vehicle in as soon as possible. Continuing to drive risks permanent catalytic converter damage and substantially higher repair costs.
Frequently Asked Questions
What Is the Difference Between a Steady and a Flashing Check Engine Light?
A steady light means a fault has been detected and the vehicle should be serviced soon. A flashing light indicates a serious active issue, often an engine misfire, and you should seek diagnosis immediately to help avoid further damage.
Why Is My Check Engine Light On if Nothing Seems Wrong?
Many faults that trigger the light affect fuel efficiency, emissions, or sensor readings before they produce noticeable symptoms. The light is the system’s early warning. Catching the fault at that stage can be less costly than waiting.
Is It Safe to Drive with the Check Engine Light On?
If the light is steady and the vehicle is driving normally, driving to a shop is generally acceptable. If the light is flashing, or if you notice rough running, loss of power, or unusual smells, minimize driving and have the vehicle diagnosed right away.
Do You Offer a Warranty on Check Engine Light Repairs?
Yes. All work we perform is covered by our 3-year/36,000-mile warranty, and it is honored at any Christian Brothers Automotive location nationwide, not just here in Prattville.
Can You Work with My Extended Warranty Provider?
We work with all major extended warranty providers. When you call to schedule, let us know you have coverage and we can confirm the details with you before your appointment.
FAQs
-
Q. "What is the difference between a steadily lit and a flashing check engine light?"A steadily lit light means that a sensor is sending a signal to your vehicle's computer that something is wrong or it could simply mean that the sensor is out. If your check engine light is flashing, however, that means there is a serious issue and you should stop driving immediately.
-
Q. "Why is my check engine light on but nothing seems to be wrong with my vehicle?"If nothing within your vehicle stands out, then it is possible that it is just a minor issue such as a loose gas cap or a bad O2 sensor. It is still recommended to see a mechanic if the light doesn't disappear to check for any larger issues.

-
Q. "What to do if your check engine light turns on?"We recommend heading to your local auto shop as soon as you are able. This is typically a sign that there is an abnormality within your engine.
-
Q. "Is it safe to drive your car when the check engine light is on?"It depends. If you are experiencing other noticeable issues with your vehicle, it may be best to pull over. Otherwise, it is typically okay to drive to your local auto shop. You will want to get this checked sooner rather than later to avoid being stranded with a broken-down car.
