Frequently Asked Questions
Why does burnt transmission fluid cause gears to slip during acceleration?
Transmission fluid provides vital hydraulic pressure and lubrication for internal clutch packs. Over time, extreme heat destroys the fluid's protective additives and friction modifiers, reducing hydraulic holding force and causing the clutch plates to rub together blindly and slip.
What is the critical mechanical difference between a fluid drain and a full flush?
A standard drain only removes the fluid resting inside the pan, leaving dirty oil trapped inside the torque converter. A professional flush utilizes specialized equipment to safely exchange the entire fluid volume across all internal lines, line coolers, and internal assemblies cleanly.
How does a faulty electronic shift solenoid alter vehicle drivability?
Shift solenoids act as electronically controlled valves that route pressurized fluid into specific gear sets. If a solenoid suffers an electrical short or mechanical blockage, it stops fluid routing entirely, causing the vehicle to skip gears or enter a protective backup mode.
Is it safe to drive my vehicle if the transmission fluid looks dark brown?
No, healthy fluid should always exhibit a vibrant pink or red color. Dark brown or black fluid indicates advanced thermal breakdown and internal friction material wear, meaning your system is currently operating under high stress and requires immediate diagnostic attention to prevent failure.
Can a malfunctioning radiator cause total internal transmission destruction?
Yes, modern vehicles utilize an integrated cooler loop where transmission lines pass directly through the radiator block. If an internal barrier fractures, engine coolant mixes with transmission fluid, instantly destroying the friction paper linings on clutch plates and requiring total structural replacement.

FAQs
-
Q. "What factors determine the price of transmission repair?"Many different factors go into determining costs of transmission repair. The major factor is what type of vehicle you drive. The year, make and model of the car, determine how much parts and labor will cost. Another factor is how much damage the transmission has sustained. Your transmission should last a minimum of 100,000 miles by servicing your transmission on a regular basis.
-
Q. "What does automatic transmission service include?"Fluid is first drained from the pan during an automatic transmission service. A new transmission filter is installed with a new pan gasket once the pan has been removed. Finally, fresh automatic transmission fluid (ATF) is used to refill the vehicle.
-
Q. "Is there a difference between a transmission fluid change and flush?"During a transmission fluid and filter change, it’s only the fluid in the pan that is drained and replaced with new ATF. Four to five quarts of fluid will typically be replaced in this process, while nine to thirteen quarts are replaced during a full transmission fluid flush. The difference in amounts is because the complete flush drains the entire system.
