Buying Your Headlamp Bulb
There are usually just a few ways of learning that you need a new headlamp bulb. This usually occurs through a failed inspection, a fix-it ticket from a police officer, or decreased visibility while driving in the dark. But no matter how you find out, it’s important to replace your headlamp quickly to ensure safe driving.
To replace your bulb, you will first need to see which one isn’t working. The quickest way to accomplish this is to have a friend or family member sit in the driver’s seat of your car and turn the lights on and off while you stand in front of the car and take note. With the help of the user manual, check to see if it is the low beams, high beams, or if both are found in the same bulb.
After that, write down the make, model, year, and engine type of your car. Take these details to an auto parts store or website to find out the type of headlamp bulb you need to buy. This is done via a numeric or alphanumeric identifier, which can also be found in your user manual.
From there, you have to select from various brands and the levels of longevity and brightness that are offered. Brighter lights won’t last as long and those that last longer won’t be as bright.
Now that you have the right bulb in your possession, you need to actually replace it. The steps required will be different based on the vehicle, so we can’t include that in this post. A step-by-step process for bulb replacement should be found in your owner manual. We also suggest searching for instructional videos on YouTube.
Keep the following in mind during your replacement:
- Turn off your headlights and engine.
- Don’t touch the glass. This will cause it to wear out faster.
- Wear gloves to protect your hands from cuts and scrapes.
- After the light is installed, operate your high and low beams to ensure they work.
