How Our Check Engine Light Diagnostics Work
We built our diagnostic process around one goal: you understand exactly what’s happening with your vehicle before any work begins. Here’s what to expect.
Step 1: Book Your Appointment
Schedule online or by phone. Describe what you’re experiencing so we can prepare, whether it’s a steady light, a flashing light, or a symptom alongside it.
Step 2: Manufacturer-Level Inspection
Our technicians use manufacturer-level equipment to run diagnostics and inspect related systems and components. We don’t stop at a fault code; we trace the issue to its source.
Step 3: Digital Vehicle Inspection Report
After diagnosis, we text you a Digital Vehicle Inspection (DVI) report with actual photos and videos from your vehicle. You see exactly what our technicians see, in plain language with no jargon.
Step 4: Your Approval Comes First
A service advisor walks you through every finding and recommendation. You can also approve work directly through the DVI. Nothing moves forward without your sign-off.
Step 5: Repair or Schedule
Many repairs can be completed during the same visit. If parts need to be ordered or the timing doesn’t work for you, we schedule around your availability.
Every visit also includes a free Courtesy Inspection covering your lights, brakes, suspension, tires, and battery.
1. Schedule Your Appointment
Whether scheduling online or over the phone be sure and let us know what you're experiencing so we can provide fast and accurate service advice.
2. Diagnostics and Inspections
Drop off your vehicle and the shop will get to work with inspections and diagnostics using the same equipment as the manufacturers to determine issues and next steps.
3. Digital Vehicle Inspection Report and Estimate
Following the diagnosis we will text you a digital vehicle inspection report, containing pictures and videos of our findings and recommendations.
4. Review and Approval
A service advisor will reach out to walk you through the findings and recommendations to determine how you would like to proceed, or you can approve work directly in your DVI.
5. Work Performed or Scheduled
Most work can be completed immediately, or scheduled based on parts and customer availability.

What Triggers a Check Engine Light?
The check engine light can signal anything from a loose gas cap to a failing catalytic converter. Other common triggers include a faulty oxygen sensor, worn spark plugs or ignition coils, a failing mass airflow sensor, and issues with the evaporative emissions system. That range is exactly why a code alone isn’t enough to act on.
Timing matters. A failed oxygen sensor left unaddressed can cause catalytic converter damage, turning a minor repair into a significantly more expensive one. A steady light with no other symptoms can still affect fuel efficiency and worsen over time. A flashing check engine light is more urgent: it typically signals an active engine misfire severe enough to damage the catalytic converter, and you should reduce speed and get the vehicle inspected as soon as safely possible.
Don’t wait on a warning light. Book your appointment online or call (531) 625-2231 to schedule check engine light service in Papillion. All repair work is backed by the Nice Difference® Warranty, 3 years/36,000 miles.
What Full Service Diagnostic Testing Actually Covers
Modern vehicles monitor hundreds of parameters across the engine, transmission, emissions, brakes, and safety systems. A fault code points toward a problem area; it doesn’t confirm the cause. Our Full Service Diagnostic Testing pairs OBD-II data with hands-on component inspection so we know what actually needs attention before recommending any repair.
The DVI report we send you is written in plain language, includes actual photos taken of your vehicle during the inspection, and explains each finding and why a repair may be warranted. You’re under no obligation to approve anything on the spot, and our service advisors answer every question before any decision is made.
Other Diagnostic Services We Offer
Sometimes symptoms appear before a warning light does. Rough idling, hesitation on acceleration, reduced fuel economy, or an unusual smell can all warrant diagnostic testing even without an illuminated light. We also offer:
- Free pre-trip road inspections for drivers preparing for a long drive
- Pre-purchase inspections to surface hidden issues before you commit to a used vehicle
If you carry an extended warranty, mention your provider when scheduling. We work with all major extended warranty carriers.

FAQs
-
Q. "What is the difference between a steadily lit and a flashing check engine light?"A steadily lit light means that a sensor is sending a signal to your vehicle's computer that something is wrong or it could simply mean that the sensor is out. If your check engine light is flashing, however, that means there is a serious issue and you should stop driving immediately.
-
Q. "Why is my check engine light on but nothing seems to be wrong with my vehicle?"If nothing within your vehicle stands out, then it is possible that it is just a minor issue such as a loose gas cap or a bad O2 sensor. It is still recommended to see a mechanic if the light doesn't disappear to check for any larger issues.
-
Q. "Do you offer a warranty?"As part of our Nice difference.® commitment to providing our customers the best auto service experience possible, we also offer a3-year/36,000-mile warranty on all the work that we do. We offer this warranty at every Christian Brothers Automotive nationwide, and it will be honored at any location, regardless of which branch did the initial work.
-
Q. "Can you provide service under my extended warranty?"Yes. At Christian Brothers Automotive, we work with all major extended warranty providers to make needed repairs for our customers. If you have an extended warranty, you can discuss your carrier with our team when scheduling an appointment and confirm that the work will be covered. You can find a partial list of the extended warranty companies we work with here.
-
Q. "What to do if your check engine light turns on?"We recommend heading to your local auto shop as soon as you are able. This is typically a sign that there is an abnormality within your engine.
-
Q. "Is it safe to drive your car when the check engine light is on?"It depends. If you are experiencing other noticeable issues with your vehicle, it may be best to pull over. Otherwise, it is typically okay to drive to your local auto shop. You will want to get this checked sooner rather than later to avoid being stranded with a broken-down car.
