Recognizing Alternator & Starter Problems Early
Signs Your Alternator May Be Failing
The alternator charges your battery and powers the vehicle’s electrical systems while the engine runs. When it starts to fail, the symptoms can look a lot like a battery problem: dim or flickering headlights, a battery warning light on the dashboard, malfunctioning power accessories like windows or the radio, or a slow engine crank. Repeated dead batteries are another sign your alternator may be undercharging.
Most alternators last between 7 and 10 years or roughly 80,000 to 150,000 miles, though frequent short trips and heavy electrical loads can shorten that range. Driving on a weakening alternator can lead to unexpected power loss, and the symptoms overlap with battery and wiring problems. A comprehensive charging system test is the reliable way to confirm which component is actually at fault.
Signs Your Starter May Be Failing
The starter motor turns the engine over to initiate combustion. When it’s wearing out, you may hear a single click or rapid clicking when you turn the key, notice slow or labored cranking, or experience intermittent failures where the car starts fine one morning and won’t start the next. A grinding noise during startup or complete silence despite a fully charged battery are also common signs.
Because a dead battery and a failed starter produce nearly identical no-start symptoms, a charging system test is the reliable way to confirm which component is at fault before any parts are ordered.
The Alternator, Starter & Battery Work as a System
These three components don’t operate in isolation. A weak alternator that undercharges the battery can eventually cause the battery to fail. Replacing the battery without testing the alternator can lead to the same issue again. Serpentine belt condition is also part of any thorough alternator diagnosis: a worn or broken belt prevents the alternator from spinning and producing power even when the unit itself is functioning correctly.
Modern vehicles with aftermarket audio systems, lighting, or other electrical accessories place higher power demands on the alternator. In some cases, a higher-output replacement unit may be appropriate. Our technicians evaluate the full charging system before recommending a repair path, so the recommendation addresses the actual cause rather than just the most visible symptom.

FAQs
-
Q. "Why is the alternator important?"The alternator helps the battery maintain power. As the car is driving, it’s gaining power from the engine. During this time, the alternator is charging the battery. When the car stops running, the charge from the alternator allows the battery to continue providing power to the car.
-
Q. "What does the alternator do?"As an alternate source of power, the alternator helps many features in the car run. It helps your air conditioning maintain proper airflow, powers the radio, and turns on the headlights, among other things. It can also add power to the engine.
-
Q. "Where is the alternator located?"You’ll typically find the alternator near the front of the engine, bolted in with two brackets. One is adjustable (to allow for drive belt-tightening) while the other is fixed.
-
Q. "What are some signs that my starter is going bad?"Some common symptoms that your starter is going bad or is dead include: clicking or other odd noises, lights working in your car but the engine won't turn, taking more than one attempt to start, or smoke coming from the hood.
-
Q. "Do you offer a warranty?"As part of our Nice difference.® commitment to providing our customers the best auto service experience possible, we also offer a3-year/36,000-mile warranty on all the work that we do. We offer this warranty at every Christian Brothers Automotive nationwide, and it will be honored at any location, regardless of which branch did the initial work.

We’ll let you know if everything is functioning properly or if there are any areas of concern. You can even approve or deny our service recommendations, all straight from your smartphone, or you can, of course, give us a call and we’ll explain our findings in further detail.
