How Our Check Engine Light Service Works
A check engine light diagnosis done right isn’t a single step. Our structured process moves from an initial scan through full system inspection to a confirmed root cause, so the repair we recommend addresses the problem. Here’s what that looks like at Christian Brothers Automotive Castle Hills.
1. Schedule Your Appointment
Whether scheduling online or over the phone be sure and let us know what you're experiencing so we can provide fast and accurate service advice.
2. Diagnostics and Inspections
Drop off your vehicle and the shop will get to work with inspections and diagnostics using the same equipment as the manufacturers to determine issues and next steps.
3. Digital Vehicle Inspection Report and Estimate
Following the diagnosis we will text you a digital vehicle inspection report, containing pictures and videos of our findings and recommendations.
4. Review and Approval
A service advisor will reach out to walk you through the findings and recommendations to determine how you would like to proceed, or you can approve work directly in your DVI.
5. Work Performed or Scheduled
Most work can be completed immediately, or scheduled based on parts and customer availability.
Serving Carrollton Along the Highway 121 Corridor
North Texas heat and stop-and-go commuting put real stress on emissions, cooling, and electrical systems. These are some of the most common triggers for check engine lights in this region, and ignoring them can contribute to catalytic converter damage.
Our Castle Hills location is convenient for drivers commuting along State Highway 121 and throughout the Carrollton area. Brad Gresham and our on-site team are here when you have questions. Call ahead or stop by, and we can walk you through your options.
Check Engine Light explained
Common Reasons Your Check Engine Light Is On
The check engine light comes on when your vehicle’s onboard computer detects a fault and stores a diagnostic trouble code. That code points to an affected system, but it doesn’t tell you which specific component failed. Common triggers include a loose or faulty gas cap, a failing oxygen sensor, catalytic converter efficiency loss, a mass airflow sensor fault, worn spark plugs or ignition coils, and evaporative emission system leaks. One code can have several possible causes, which is why Full Service Diagnostic Testing matters. Reading the code is the starting point, not the conclusion.
Steady vs. Flashing Check Engine Light
A steady check engine light means a fault has been detected and your vehicle should be diagnosed promptly, but it doesn’t usually require pulling over immediately. A flashing or blinking light is a different situation. It signals an active engine misfire, which can damage your catalytic converter quickly. If your light is flashing, minimize driving and get the vehicle to a shop as soon as possible.
Continuing to drive with a flashing check engine light can turn a repairable misfire into a much more expensive repair. When in doubt, call us and we can help you assess your next steps.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a Check Engine Light Always Serious?
Not always, but there’s no way to know without a proper diagnosis. It can signal something minor like a loose gas cap or something significant like an engine misfire or catalytic converter problem. Diagnosis is the only reliable way to find out.
What Does Full Service Diagnostic Testing Include?
Our Full Service Diagnostic Testing goes beyond basic OBD scanner codes. We scan for stored and pending trouble codes, inspect affected systems, and confirm the root cause before recommending any repair. You’ll get a detailed estimate before we begin any work, and nothing proceeds without your approval.
Will My Check Engine Light Come Back After You Clear It?
If the underlying problem isn’t fixed, yes. Clearing a code without repairing the fault is a temporary measure at best. Our goal is to identify and address the root cause so the light is less likely to return.
What Warranty Covers My Repair?
Every repair we complete is backed by the Nice Difference® Warranty: 3 years/36,000 miles, whichever occurs last.
Do You Offer a Shuttle While My Car Is Being Diagnosed?
Yes. Complimentary shuttle service is available so you don’t have to wait at the shop while we work.
What Else Do You Check During a Visit?
We can pair your check engine light diagnostic with a free Courtesy Inspection that covers lights, brakes, suspension, tires, and battery. It’s a good way to get a fuller picture of your vehicle’s condition in one visit.

FAQs
-
Q. "What is the difference between a steadily lit and a flashing check engine light?"A steadily lit light means that a sensor is sending a signal to your vehicle's computer that something is wrong or it could simply mean that the sensor is out. If your check engine light is flashing, however, that means there is a serious issue and you should stop driving immediately.
-
Q. "Why is my check engine light on but nothing seems to be wrong with my vehicle?"If nothing within your vehicle stands out, then it is possible that it is just a minor issue such as a loose gas cap or a bad O2 sensor. It is still recommended to see a mechanic if the light doesn't disappear to check for any larger issues.
-
Q. "Do you offer a warranty?"As part of our Nice difference.® commitment to providing our customers the best auto service experience possible, we also offer a3-year/36,000-mile warranty on all the work that we do. We offer this warranty at every Christian Brothers Automotive nationwide, and it will be honored at any location, regardless of which branch did the initial work.
-
Q. "Can you provide service under my extended warranty?"Yes. At Christian Brothers Automotive, we work with all major extended warranty providers to make needed repairs for our customers. If you have an extended warranty, you can discuss your carrier with our team when scheduling an appointment and confirm that the work will be covered. You can find a partial list of the extended warranty companies we work with here.
-
Q. "What to do if your check engine light turns on?"We recommend heading to your local auto shop as soon as you are able. This is typically a sign that there is an abnormality within your engine.
-
Q. "Is it safe to drive your car when the check engine light is on?"It depends. If you are experiencing other noticeable issues with your vehicle, it may be best to pull over. Otherwise, it is typically okay to drive to your local auto shop. You will want to get this checked sooner rather than later to avoid being stranded with a broken-down car.
