How Our Diagnostic Process Works
From drop-off to approval, our process keeps you informed at every step. Your vehicle gets a thorough inspection and full-service diagnostic using manufacturer-quality equipment. No surprises, no work without your go-ahead.

Understanding Your Check Engine Light
The malfunction indicator lamp (MIL), commonly called the check engine light, monitors a wide range of systems beyond the engine itself: emissions, fuel delivery, sensor networks, and more. That’s why reading a code alone doesn’t always tell you what needs to be fixed. Technician assessment of the affected system is what turns a code into a diagnosis.
How the light behaves matters. A steady light means the computer has flagged a problem that should be diagnosed soon. In most cases, the vehicle is still drivable to a shop, but the issue shouldn’t be deferred. A solid light can affect fuel economy and produce irregular emissions even when no drivability symptom is obvious.
A flashing check engine light is a different situation. It typically signals an active engine misfire, and continuing to drive can damage the catalytic converter and lead to significantly more costly repairs. If your light is flashing, bring your vehicle in right away rather than waiting for a scheduled appointment.
Common Reasons the Check Engine Light Turns On
A handful of issues account for the majority of check engine light triggers Spring, TX drivers encounter. Knowing the most frequent causes can help you recognize what may be happening before you arrive.
- Loose or faulty gas cap: One of the most common and easily resolved triggers. A gap in the cap disrupts the evaporative emissions system and trips the light.
- Failing oxygen sensor: Affects how the engine calculates fuel mixture. A degraded sensor reduces fuel efficiency over time if left unaddressed.
- Spark plug or ignition coil issues: Can trigger a steady light and, if causing misfires, may produce a flashing light.
- Deteriorating catalytic converter: Sensors detect when the converter is no longer processing exhaust efficiently and flag it through the emissions system.
- Mass airflow sensor fault: Affects fuel delivery calculations, often causing rough idling or reduced performance.
- Vacuum leaks or EVAP system issues: Common in the Spring, TX climate, where heat accelerates hose and seal wear in the evaporative emissions control system.
Frequently Asked Questions
What’s the difference between a steady and a flashing check engine light?
A steady light means a sensor has flagged an issue for diagnosis. A flashing light means a serious problem is active and the vehicle shouldn’t be driven until it’s inspected.
Is it safe to drive with the check engine light on?
It depends. A flashing light means stop driving. A steady light generally means you can drive to a shop, but the issue should be addressed promptly before it develops into something larger.
Why is my check engine light on if my car seems fine?
Minor issues like a loose gas cap or a sensor reading out of range can trip the light without any drivability symptom. Diagnosis is still recommended to rule out anything developing underneath.
Do you offer a warranty on check engine light repairs?
Yes. The Nice Difference® Warranty covers all work for 3 years or 36,000 miles and is honored at any Christian Brothers Automotive location nationwide.
Can you work with my extended warranty?
Yes. We work with all major extended warranty providers. Let us know your carrier when you schedule and we’ll confirm your coverage.

FAQs
-
Q. "What is the difference between a steadily lit and a flashing check engine light?"A steadily lit light means that a sensor is sending a signal to your vehicle's computer that something is wrong or it could simply mean that the sensor is out. If your check engine light is flashing, however, that means there is a serious issue and you should stop driving immediately.
-
Q. "Why is my check engine light on but nothing seems to be wrong with my vehicle?"If nothing within your vehicle stands out, then it is possible that it is just a minor issue such as a loose gas cap or a bad O2 sensor. It is still recommended to see a mechanic if the light doesn't disappear to check for any larger issues.
