How Our Car Diagnostic Testing Process Works
We follow a consistent three-step process so you always know what’s happening with your vehicle and why.
Step 1: Connect & Test
Our technicians connect state-of-the-art, manufacturer-level diagnostic equipment directly to your vehicle’s onboard systems. This goes well beyond pulling a trouble code. We retrieve live data from the relevant modules and perform targeted testing to isolate the actual source of a fault. It could be a sensor, a circuit, a mechanical component, or something else entirely.
Step 2: Analyze & Confirm
Some issues require no repair at all. Others need immediate attention. Our technicians work through the data to confirm which situation applies before any recommendation is made, preventing unnecessary parts costs and keeping the focus on what your vehicle actually needs.
Step 3: Review & Decide
You receive a comprehensive Digital Vehicle Inspection (DVI) report that outlines all findings in clear, easy-to-understand language. We walk through it with you, answer your questions, and wait for your approval before beginning any repair. You decide what happens next: no pressure, no surprises.
1. Schedule Your Appointment
Whether scheduling online or over the phone be sure and let us know what you're experiencing so we can provide fast and accurate service advice.
2. Diagnostics and Inspections
Drop off your vehicle and the shop will get to work with inspections and diagnostics using the same equipment as the manufacturers to determine issues and next steps.
3. Digital Vehicle Inspection Report and Estimate
Following the diagnosis we will text you a digital vehicle inspection report, containing pictures and videos of our findings and recommendations.
4. Review and Approval
A service advisor will reach out to walk you through the findings and recommendations to determine how you would like to proceed, or you can approve work directly in your DVI.
5. Work Performed or Scheduled
Most work can be completed immediately, or scheduled based on parts and customer availability.

What You Receive After Testing & What Comes Next
Every car diagnostic testing appointment at Christian Brothers Automotive Ocotillo includes a free Digital Vehicle Inspection (DVI) report. This isn’t a printout of trouble codes. It’s a detailed summary of your vehicle’s condition, including actual photographs, written in plain language so you can read it without a mechanical background.
The DVI report helps you prioritize. Some findings are safety-critical and need prompt attention. Others are worth planning for on a future visit. Some require no action at all. Our technicians walk through each item with you, answer questions, and won’t schedule a single repair until you’ve reviewed the plan and given your approval. You leave with a clear record of your vehicle’s condition and can make a decision on your own terms.
Signs Your Vehicle May Need Diagnostic Testing
A check engine light that stays on is the most common reason drivers schedule car diagnostic testing. A flashing check engine light may signal a more urgent condition, such as an active engine misfire, and is worth addressing promptly. Other warning lights, including those for the transmission, battery, oil pressure, and tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS), can all point to underlying issues that testing can identify.
Warning lights aren’t the only trigger. Performance changes often show up before a light does. Rough idling, hard starting, reduced power, poor fuel economy, or unfamiliar noises are all worth investigating before the underlying problem compounds into something more involved.
Arizona driving conditions add another layer. Prolonged heat accelerates wear on sensors, cooling system components, and electrical parts in ways that don’t always produce obvious symptoms until a warning light finally appears. Vehicles with high mileage or an extended gap since their last service visit can benefit from proactive testing as part of a routine maintenance check. Catching a fault early can often keep repair costs lower than waiting for the symptom to worsen.

FAQs
-
Q. "What does a vehicle test do?"
Today’s vehicles are more advanced than ever. They’re essentially computers on wheels, with complex systems controlling everything from performance and safety to comfort and efficiency. When a warning light comes on or something feels off, our testing process takes a deep dive into these systems to identify the real issue, not just a surface-level code. This thorough approach goes far beyond a quick parts-store scan and helps ensure repairs are accurate, effective, and long-lasting.
-
Q. "How long does a vehicle test take?"We believe in doing things right, not rushing through them. While some tests can be completed quickly, others take more time, depending on the concern. We’ll always keep you informed along the way, giving you peace of mind on the road to the people and places that matter most.
