See Your Vehicle’s Findings Before We Touch It
The Digital Vehicle Inspection is how we replace guesswork with documentation. When your vehicle arrives, our technicians perform a thorough inspection using the same diagnostic equipment manufacturers use to evaluate the charging system. A scan tool reads any stored error codes, live data from the charging system is analyzed, and a load test on the battery distinguishes a failing alternator from a failing battery.
Once the inspection is complete, you receive a text with your DVI report, complete with firsthand photos of what our technicians found. Approve what you want addressed, decline what you don’t. A service advisor follows up to answer any questions and confirm next steps. No surprises, no pressure.
Signs Your Alternator or Starter May Be Failing
Catching a problem early can help you avoid a breakdown. Here are the warning signs worth knowing for each component.
Alternator warning signs:
- Battery warning light illuminated while the engine is running
- Headlights or interior lights that dim or flicker as engine speed changes
- Electrical accessories, power windows, radio, climate controls, responding sluggishly
- A battery that tests fine but drains after driving
- A burning smell near the alternator belt area
Starter warning signs:
- A single loud click or rapid clicking when turning the key with no engine crank
- Engine cranks very slowly even when the battery is fully charged
- Inconsistent starting. Sometimes starts, sometimes doesn’t
- Lights and electronics work normally but the engine won’t turn over
One useful distinction: a failing alternator often lets the engine start but can cause it to die shortly after because it’s no longer sustaining the battery charge while driving. A dead battery prevents starting entirely. If your vehicle starts but stalls soon after, alternator replacement may be the right conversation to have with our Knoxville team. When alternator work is performed, we also inspect the serpentine belt at the same time, since it typically must be removed during the repair.
What to Expect During Your Service Visit
Here’s how a typical alternator and starter appointment works at our Knoxville shop.
- Schedule: Book online or call us and describe what you’re experiencing. Sharing symptoms upfront helps our team prepare.
- Drop off: Leave your vehicle with us. Our technicians begin diagnostics using manufacturer-equivalent equipment to pinpoint whether the charging system, starting system, or another component is the source of the issue.
- Receive your DVI: You’ll get a text with your Digital Vehicle Inspection report and photos. Review it on your phone at your convenience.
- Review and approve: A service advisor walks through the findings with you. You decide what gets done. Nothing moves forward without your approval.
- Work completed: Once you approve, repairs begin. Completion time depends on your vehicle’s make and model. Some vehicles require more component removal to access the alternator, which affects total repair time.
If your vehicle can’t be driven in due to a suspected starter or alternator failure, call us before you do anything else. Our team can walk you through your options before you arrive. Our Free Shuttle Service is available at drop-off so you don’t have to wait at the shop.

FAQs
-
Q. "Why is the alternator important?"The alternator helps the battery maintain power. As the car is driving, it’s gaining power from the engine. During this time, the alternator is charging the battery. When the car stops running, the charge from the alternator allows the battery to continue providing power to the car.
-
Q. "What does the alternator do?"As an alternate source of power, the alternator helps many features in the car run. It helps your air conditioning maintain proper airflow, powers the radio, and turns on the headlights, among other things. It can also add power to the engine.
-
Q. "Where is the alternator located?"You’ll typically find the alternator near the front of the engine, bolted in with two brackets. One is adjustable (to allow for drive belt-tightening) while the other is fixed.
-
Q. "What are some signs that my starter is going bad?"Some common symptoms that your starter is going bad or is dead include: clicking or other odd noises, lights working in your car but the engine won't turn, taking more than one attempt to start, or smoke coming from the hood.
-
Q. "Do you offer a warranty?"As part of our Nice difference.® commitment to providing our customers the best auto service experience possible, we also offer a3-year/36,000-mile warranty on all the work that we do. We offer this warranty at every Christian Brothers Automotive nationwide, and it will be honored at any location, regardless of which branch did the initial work.
-
Q. "What is a Digital Vehicle Inspection?"With a complimentary Digital Vehicle Inspection (DVI) on every visit, you’ll see firsthand photos of your vehicle from under the hood. We’ll let you know if everything is functioning properly or if there are any areas of concern. You can even approve or deny our service recommendations, all straight from your smartphone, or you can, of course, give us a call and we’ll explain our findings in further detail.
