Are You Making The Single Biggest Cooling System Mistake?
Despite its name, the cooling system isn’t only responsible for cooling down the engine during warm weather. The cooling system’s primary purpose is maintaining the correct temperature under the hood.
During the summer, this means transferring heat to protect the engine. During the cold months, this means warming up the engine to keep the fluids and pipes from freezing. When the correct temperature is maintained, the vehicle will perform as designed.
What mistake are you making with your cooling system?
The single biggest problem we see with cooling systems are drivers who add the wrong antifreeze-to-water ratio. The engine (especially in diesel trucks) requires a precise mix of water and antifreeze to adequately protect the engine. The mixture of water, antifreeze and other protective additives is called coolant.
Coolant is a specially-formulated liquid designed to protect the engine. Coolant operates at the correct temperature to prevent warping of the components. It also keeps the engine from overheating and shutting down, or from freezing in our cold West Michigan winters.
In Michigan, the most common mistake drivers make is adding too much water. Adding pure water to your cooling system is only for emergency situations. If water is added in large amounts, have your system inspected as soon as possible. Having the wrong mixture of liquids changes the boiling and freezing points in the system and could result in engine damage.
When should the cooling system be serviced?
Have your cooling system checked with every oil change. While full system service is typically only required every 30,000-60,000 miles, our ASE-certified technicians will inspect the level and quality of coolant, as well as check for any system leaks or damage.
At our Grand Rapids location, the cooling system needs special maintenance compared to other Christian Brothers Automotive stores. With our unique, frigid climate, the cooling system works twice as hard as it does in warmer weather. We make sure our customers have protection for those below-freezing winter temperatures.
