Our Alternator & Starter Repair Process

We begin by determining whether the vehicle is supplying and using electrical power correctly. We assess the vehicle, document relevant findings, and review the recommended work with you before proceeding.

The service process includes:

  • Vehicle assessment: Our technicians evaluate the symptoms and identify which starting or charging components require attention.
  • Documented findings: Digital inspection reports can include photos of worn parts so you can see what our technicians found.
  • Repair approval: You review the findings and estimate before authorizing the recommended work.
  • Approved repair: We complete the work you authorize.

We also recommend a complimentary courtesy inspection with every oil change or at least once every six months. This inspection is separate from the testing needed to diagnose a specific electrical concern.

Signs Your Starter May Be Failing

Starter trouble usually appears when you turn the key or press the ignition button. You might hear clicking, encounter a no-crank condition, or receive no response even though the dashboard lights and accessories still operate normally.

A jump-start test can offer a useful clue. If the vehicle still doesn’t respond after a jump, the starter may be the cause, but the symptom isn’t a final diagnosis. Battery condition, electrical connections, and other starting components must be evaluated before the faulty part can be confirmed.

Signs You May Need Alternator Replacement in Aurora

Alternator problems tend to appear while the engine is running. Common signs include dimming or flickering lights, an illuminated battery warning light, or an engine that stalls after starting.

If your vehicle starts with a jump and stalls again within a few minutes, the alternator likely isn’t recharging the battery. If it starts and continues running normally, the battery was more likely low. These patterns narrow the possibilities, but proper testing is still needed.

A healthy charging system typically produces a voltage reading of about 13.8 to 14.2 volts at the battery while the engine is running. A reading below 13 volts or a spike above 15 volts signals a problem, but it doesn’t identify the faulty component. Our technicians evaluate the system before recommending alternator replacement.

Clicking, a no-crank condition, dim lights, battery warnings, and stalling can have more than one cause. We diagnose the vehicle before identifying the faulty component, then provide documented findings for your review.

How Aurora Cold Affects Starting & Charging Systems

Cold weather slows the chemical reaction inside a vehicle battery, reducing its available power. At 0°F, a car battery can lose up to 60% of its starting power. That loss can expose an already weak battery or leave the starter with less available current.

Lower battery output also increases demand on the alternator, which must work to restore the battery. Short trips may not provide enough time for a full recharge, particularly when the heater, defrosters, and lights are operating.

A winter no-start doesn’t automatically mean the battery is the only problem. Testing the battery, starter, and charging system distinguishes cold-weather battery performance from faults elsewhere in the vehicle.

FAQs

  • Q. "Why is the alternator important?"
The alternator helps the battery maintain power. As the car is driving, it’s gaining power from the engine. During this time, the alternator is charging the battery. When the car stops running, the charge from the alternator allows the battery to continue providing power to the car.
  • Q. "What does the alternator do?"
As an alternate source of power, the alternator helps many features in the car run. It helps your air conditioning maintain proper airflow, powers the radio, and turns on the headlights, among other things. It can also add power to the engine.
  • Q. "Where is the alternator located?"
You’ll typically find the alternator near the front of the engine, bolted in with two brackets. One is adjustable (to allow for drive belt-tightening) while the other is fixed.
  • Q. "What are some signs that my starter is going bad?"
Some common symptoms that your starter is going bad or is dead include: clicking or other odd noises, lights working in your car but the engine won't turn, taking more than one attempt to start, or smoke coming from the hood.
  • Q. "Do you offer a warranty?"
As part of our Nice difference.® commitment to providing our customers the best auto service experience possible, we also offer a3-year/36,000-mile warranty on all the work that we do. We offer this warranty at every Christian Brothers Automotive nationwide, and it will be honored at any location, regardless of which branch did the initial work.
  • Q. "What is a Digital Vehicle Inspection?"
With a complimentary Digital Vehicle Inspection (DVI) on every visit, you’ll see firsthand photos of your vehicle from under the hood. We’ll let you know if everything is functioning properly or if there are any areas of concern. You can even approve or deny our service recommendations, all straight from your smartphone, or you can, of course, give us a call and we’ll explain our findings in further detail.
