Our Alternator & Starter Diagnostic Process
We connect the symptoms you’ve noticed with system testing and documented findings instead of relying on guesswork.
1. Symptom Review & Inspection
We begin by asking when the problem occurs and how the vehicle responds. That may include clicking, slow cranking, repeated jump-starts, or electrical power loss after startup. We then inspect and test the relevant components.
2. Digital Findings & Recommendations
You receive a digital vehicle inspection report with photos and videos. We review the diagnosed fault and recommended work so you understand the proposed repair before making a decision.
3. Approval & Repair
Work begins after you approve it and depends on parts availability. Test results may point to the battery, alternator, starter, wiring, connections, belt, or another electrical component.
1. Schedule Your Appointment
Whether scheduling online or over the phone be sure and let us know what you're experiencing so we can provide fast and accurate service advice.
2. Diagnostics and Inspections
Drop off your vehicle and the shop will get to work with inspections and diagnostics using the same equipment as the manufacturers to determine issues and next steps.
3. Digital Vehicle Inspection Report and Estimate
Following the diagnosis we will text you a digital vehicle inspection report, containing pictures and videos of our findings and recommendations.
4. Review and Approval
A service advisor will reach out to walk you through the findings and recommendations to determine how you would like to proceed, or you can approve work directly in your DVI.
5. Work Performed or Scheduled
Most work can be completed immediately, or scheduled based on parts and customer availability.
Starter, Alternator, or Battery Symptoms
Symptoms can narrow the possibilities, but they can’t confirm a diagnosis on their own. Battery age, corroded terminals, loose connections, damaged wiring, belt trouble, and parasitic electrical drains can all resemble alternator or starter failure.
Starting and charging problems often appear in different ways:
- Clicking or no cranking: A single click, repeated clicking, or an engine that won’t turn over may involve the starter, battery, connections, or wiring.
- Slow cranking: An engine that turns over sluggishly may point to low battery power, excessive electrical resistance, or a starter motor problem.
- Power loss after startup: Dimming headlights, failing accessories, stalling, or a battery warning light may signal a charging problem.
- Repeated dead batteries: A vehicle that regularly needs a jump-start may have an aging battery, charging fault, poor connection, or parasitic drain.
Battery testing and charging-system diagnosis allow us to separate these possible causes before recommending replacement parts.
Starting & Charging Service for Many Vehicle Makes
We service a wide range of American and foreign makes and models for drivers from Littleton, Columbine, and Ken Caryl. Diagnostic requirements vary by engine configuration, battery placement, charging controls, and on-board electronics.
Those differences affect how we evaluate the alternator, voltage regulator, starter motor, battery, and related circuits. Our recommendations are based on the vehicle’s symptoms and test results, not its make or model alone.
Get a Clear Diagnosis for Your No-Start Problem
Schedule an inspection if your vehicle won’t crank, repeatedly needs jump-starts, loses electrical power, or displays a battery or charging warning. Tell us when the issue occurs, which warning lights appear, and whether the vehicle is currently operable. We can use those details to guide the inspection and explain what we find.
Can You Drive With a Starting or Charging Problem?
Whether you can drive the vehicle depends on the symptoms and their severity. A car that starts after a jump may still have an unresolved battery, charging, connection, or electrical-drain problem. It may not restart after you turn it off.
Loss of electrical power while driving may mean the alternator isn’t supplying the vehicle properly. If the engine stalls, you notice a burning odor or smoke, or major electrical functions stop working, pull over safely and arrange assistance instead of continuing to drive.
Repeated clicking, slower cranking, flickering lights, and an illuminated battery warning light also warrant prompt attention. Although these signs don’t identify a single failed part, they indicate that the battery and related electrical components need testing.

FAQs
-
Q. "Why is the alternator important?"The alternator helps the battery maintain power. As the car is driving, it’s gaining power from the engine. During this time, the alternator is charging the battery. When the car stops running, the charge from the alternator allows the battery to continue providing power to the car.
-
Q. "What does the alternator do?"As an alternate source of power, the alternator helps many features in the car run. It helps your air conditioning maintain proper airflow, powers the radio, and turns on the headlights, among other things. It can also add power to the engine.
-
Q. "Where is the alternator located?"You’ll typically find the alternator near the front of the engine, bolted in with two brackets. One is adjustable (to allow for drive belt-tightening) while the other is fixed.
-
Q. "What are some signs that my starter is going bad?"Some common symptoms that your starter is going bad or is dead include: clicking or other odd noises, lights working in your car but the engine won't turn, taking more than one attempt to start, or smoke coming from the hood.
-
Q. "Do you offer a warranty?"As part of our Nice difference.® commitment to providing our customers the best auto service experience possible, we also offer a3-year/36,000-mile warranty on all the work that we do. We offer this warranty at every Christian Brothers Automotive nationwide, and it will be honored at any location, regardless of which branch did the initial work.
-
Q. "What is a Digital Vehicle Inspection?"With a complimentary Digital Vehicle Inspection (DVI) on every visit, you’ll see firsthand photos of your vehicle from under the hood. We’ll let you know if everything is functioning properly or if there are any areas of concern. You can even approve or deny our service recommendations, all straight from your smartphone, or you can, of course, give us a call and we’ll explain our findings in further detail.
