How Our Check Engine Light Service Works
From your first call to the completed repair, our process is built around clarity and your approval at every stage.
Step 1: Schedule
Book online or by phone and describe what you’re experiencing. The more detail you share upfront, the faster our team can provide accurate service advice when you arrive.
Step 2: Diagnostics & Inspection
Our ASE-certified technicians use the same equipment as the manufacturers to perform a thorough inspection and determine exactly what triggered the light and what needs to happen next.
Step 3: Digital Vehicle Inspection Report & Estimate
We text you a Digital Vehicle Inspection report with photos and videos of our findings alongside a clear estimate. No surprises, no technical jargon.
Step 4: Review & Approval
A service advisor walks you through the DVI report and all recommendations. You approve or decline any work directly in the report or by phone. Nothing moves forward without your go-ahead.
Step 5: Work Performed or Scheduled
Most work can be completed immediately after approval. If parts or scheduling require more time, we’ll coordinate around your availability.
1. Schedule Your Appointment
Whether scheduling online or over the phone be sure and let us know what you're experiencing so we can provide fast and accurate service advice.
2. Diagnostics and Inspections
Drop off your vehicle and the shop will get to work with inspections and diagnostics using the same equipment as the manufacturers to determine issues and next steps.
3. Digital Vehicle Inspection Report and Estimate
Following the diagnosis we will text you a digital vehicle inspection report, containing pictures and videos of our findings and recommendations.
4. Review and Approval
A service advisor will reach out to walk you through the findings and recommendations to determine how you would like to proceed, or you can approve work directly in your DVI.
5. Work Performed or Scheduled
Most work can be completed immediately, or scheduled based on parts and customer availability.
More Than a Code Scan
A basic OBD-II reader tells you which system flagged a fault. Our Full Service Diagnostic Testing goes further, identifying which component may have failed and what testing indicates, so repairs address the underlying problem. Every repair is backed by the Nice Difference® Warranty, and with owner/operators on-site at our Waunakee location, you have a direct point of accountability from diagnosis through completion. Nice difference.

Wisconsin winters put real stress on batteries, fuel systems, and sensors. Cold-weather conditions can trigger a check engine light even when the underlying cause isn’t obvious from the outside. That’s why a proper diagnostic matters year-round, not just a visual check or a quick code read that doesn’t confirm what actually failed.
What the Check Engine Light Is Actually Telling You
Your vehicle’s OBD-II system monitors the engine, transmission, and emissions systems through a network of sensors. When one reading falls outside acceptable parameters, the system stores a diagnostic trouble code and turns on the warning light. That code identifies which system flagged a fault. It doesn’t tell you which specific component may have failed or why.
That distinction matters. A basic OBD-II code reader available at any auto parts store can pull the stored code, but that code is a starting point, not a diagnosis. Acting on a code alone without professional testing often leads to replacing parts that aren’t actually defective, which costs money and can leave the real problem unresolved.
Flashing vs. Solid Check Engine Light
A Flashing Check Engine Light is your vehicle’s urgent signal. It typically indicates an active engine misfire, which can send unburned fuel into the exhaust and can cause rapid damage to the catalytic converter. If you see a flashing light, reduce speed and get to a shop as soon as possible.
A Solid Check Engine Light is less immediately critical but still requires attention. It commonly points to issues like a loose gas cap creating an evaporative emissions system leak, a failing oxygen sensor, or other sensor and ignition system problems. The vehicle may seem to drive normally, but an undiagnosed issue won’t resolve itself and can develop into a more serious and expensive repair over time.
Why Professional Diagnostic Testing Goes Further
Full Service Diagnostic Testing from our ASE-certified technicians combines the stored OBD-II data with hands-on inspection and manufacturer-grade diagnostic equipment. The goal is to confirm which component is responsible and whether any related systems have been affected. You receive that information in a Digital Vehicle Inspection report with supporting photos and video before any repair decision is made, giving you the clarity you need to make a confident choice about your vehicle.

FAQs
-
Q. "What is the difference between a steadily lit and a flashing check engine light?"A steadily lit light means that a sensor is sending a signal to your vehicle's computer that something is wrong or it could simply mean that the sensor is out. If your check engine light is flashing, however, that means there is a serious issue and you should stop driving immediately.
-
Q. "Why is my check engine light on but nothing seems to be wrong with my vehicle?"If nothing within your vehicle stands out, then it is possible that it is just a minor issue such as a loose gas cap or a bad O2 sensor. It is still recommended to see a mechanic if the light doesn't disappear to check for any larger issues.
-
Q. "Do you offer a warranty?"As part of our Nice difference.® commitment to providing our customers the best auto service experience possible, we also offer a3-year/36,000-mile warranty on all the work that we do. We offer this warranty at every Christian Brothers Automotive nationwide, and it will be honored at any location, regardless of which branch did the initial work.
-
Q. "Can you provide service under my extended warranty?"Yes. At Christian Brothers Automotive, we work with all major extended warranty providers to make needed repairs for our customers. If you have an extended warranty, you can discuss your carrier with our team when scheduling an appointment and confirm that the work will be covered. You can find a partial list of the extended warranty companies we work with here.
-
Q. "What to do if your check engine light turns on?"We recommend heading to your local auto shop as soon as you are able. This is typically a sign that there is an abnormality within your engine.
-
Q. "Is it safe to drive your car when the check engine light is on?"It depends. If you are experiencing other noticeable issues with your vehicle, it may be best to pull over. Otherwise, it is typically okay to drive to your local auto shop. You will want to get this checked sooner rather than later to avoid being stranded with a broken-down car.
