How the Starter & Alternator Work Together
The starter draws stored battery power to crank the engine. Once the engine is running, the alternator supplies electrical power and recharges the battery. Problems with the battery, either component, or an electrical connection can therefore produce overlapping symptoms.
A dashboard battery light, dim headlights, or accessories losing power can point to an electrical concern. Clicking when you turn the key without the engine cranking can indicate that insufficient voltage is reaching the starter. Testing is still necessary because the symptom alone doesn’t confirm which component requires service.
Warning Signs That Call for System Testing
Slow cranking, repeated failures to start, recurring battery discharge, and lights that dim while driving can indicate that the battery, alternator, starter, or related connections aren’t supplying or transferring enough power.
Testing while the vehicle can still start lets you address the concern before it develops into a complete no-crank condition, when the engine doesn’t turn over. Diagnosis determines whether alternator replacement, starter repair, battery service, or attention to another electrical component is appropriate.
Every visit also includes a free courtesy inspection covering these major items:
- Lights
- Brakes
- Suspension
- Tires
- Battery
Cold-Weather Electrical Demands in Olathe
Sub-freezing temperatures reduce a battery’s chemical efficiency and cold-cranking performance. At 0°F, a standard automotive battery can lose up to 60 percent of its electrical starting capacity, according to AAA’s Automotive Research Center. Cold starts also require more from the starter and alternator.
Short suburban trips and stop-and-go driving in Olathe and across Johnson County may not give the alternator enough operating time to restore the battery’s charge fully. These conditions don’t prove that a component has failed, but they make accurate battery, starting-circuit, and alternator-output testing especially useful when symptoms appear.
Warranty Coverage & Service Convenience
Our alternator and starter work is supported by a parts-and-labor warranty lasting 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs last. The warranty is honored at Christian Brothers Automotive Olathe and other locations nationwide.
We also offer complimentary shuttle service to reduce disruption while your vehicle is being inspected or repaired. If you choose to wait, free WiFi is available for your use.
Get Clear Answers About Your Starting Concern
A battery light, slow cranking, repeated battery discharge, or failure to start can have several possible causes. We test the relevant components, then review the findings and estimate with you before approved work begins.
Our testing-first approach identifies the component that requires attention without treating similar symptoms as proof of an alternator or starter failure.

How Testing Separates Similar Electrical Symptoms
Low voltage can cause clicking, slow cranking, or a failure to crank. Inadequate alternator output can leave a recently charged battery low again, while a faulty electrical connection can create similar behavior. Symptoms alone don’t establish which part needs attention.
We test battery condition, alternator output, and the starting circuit to separate these possibilities. The results show whether the battery, starter, alternator, or a related connection requires service and whether replacement is needed.

FAQs
-
Q. "Why is the alternator important?"The alternator helps the battery maintain power. As the car is driving, it’s gaining power from the engine. During this time, the alternator is charging the battery. When the car stops running, the charge from the alternator allows the battery to continue providing power to the car.
-
Q. "What does the alternator do?"As an alternate source of power, the alternator helps many features in the car run. It helps your air conditioning maintain proper airflow, powers the radio, and turns on the headlights, among other things. It can also add power to the engine.
-
Q. "Where is the alternator located?"You’ll typically find the alternator near the front of the engine, bolted in with two brackets. One is adjustable (to allow for drive belt-tightening) while the other is fixed.
-
Q. "What are some signs that my starter is going bad?"Some common symptoms that your starter is going bad or is dead include: clicking or other odd noises, lights working in your car but the engine won't turn, taking more than one attempt to start, or smoke coming from the hood.
-
Q. "Do you offer a warranty?"As part of our Nice difference.® commitment to providing our customers the best auto service experience possible, we also offer a3-year/36,000-mile warranty on all the work that we do. We offer this warranty at every Christian Brothers Automotive nationwide, and it will be honored at any location, regardless of which branch did the initial work.
-
Q. "What is a Digital Vehicle Inspection?"With a complimentary Digital Vehicle Inspection (DVI) on every visit, you’ll see firsthand photos of your vehicle from under the hood. We’ll let you know if everything is functioning properly or if there are any areas of concern. You can even approve or deny our service recommendations, all straight from your smartphone, or you can, of course, give us a call and we’ll explain our findings in further detail.
