How Alternators & Starters Work
Understanding what these components do makes it easier to recognize when something is wrong. The starter draws power from the battery to engage the flywheel and crank the engine. It only operates for a few seconds each time you start the car, but when it fails, the engine won’t turn over at all.
How the Alternator Fits Into the System
The alternator takes over once the engine is running. It converts the engine’s mechanical energy into electrical energy, recharging the battery and powering the headlights, windshield wipers, radio, air conditioning, and power windows. It’s typically mounted near the front of the engine and driven by the serpentine belt, so a worn or broken belt cuts it off from its power source entirely.
When an alternator fails, the vehicle runs on whatever charge remains in the battery. Depending on battery state and electrical load, you may have anywhere from a few minutes to a short drive before systems start shutting down. Leaving a failing alternator unaddressed can accelerate battery wear, cause electrical shorts, and increase strain on the starter, turning what could be a single repair into several.
