A Code Is a Starting Point, Not an Answer
A basic OBD-II scan reads a trouble code and identifies a fault category. It doesn’t tell you which specific component failed or why. Our technicians go further, analyzing live sensor data and computer module readings to pinpoint the root cause. That distinction matters because replacing the wrong part can waste money and leave the real problem unsolved. With manufacturer-quality equipment and ASE-certified technicians, our Full Service Diagnostic Testing gives you a complete picture before any repair is recommended.
Common Reasons Your Check Engine Light Comes On
The same warning light can be triggered by hundreds of different diagnostic codes. Some causes are simple; others signal problems that can get worse the longer you drive. Here are the most frequent triggers our technicians see:
- Loose or missing gas cap – One of the most common triggers, and one of the easiest to resolve
- Faulty oxygen sensor – Reduces fuel efficiency and, left unaddressed, can damage the catalytic converter
- Engine misfires – P0300 series codes indicate random or multiple-cylinder misfires that stress the catalytic converter
- Mass airflow (MAF) sensor failure – Disrupts the fuel-air mixture and degrades engine performance
- Catalytic converter efficiency fault – Indicates the converter is no longer processing exhaust emissions within specification
- Emissions system faults – Including EGR system issues that affect engine performance and emissions compliance
Because the light alone doesn’t indicate severity, professional diagnosis is warranted no matter how the vehicle is running. A car that feels fine can still carry a code that worsens with time.
What Happens During Your Diagnostic Appointment
When you bring your vehicle to Christian Brothers Automotive Norman for a check engine light concern, our process is transparent from drop-off to approval.
How the Diagnostic Process Works
- Full Service Diagnostic Testing – Our technicians connect manufacturer-quality equipment to your vehicle and analyze real-time data from sensors and computer modules, going beyond the fault code to identify which component may have failed and why
- Digital Vehicle Inspection report – After diagnosis, we send you a DVI report with photos and videos of our findings so you can see exactly what we’re seeing
- Plain-language review – Your service advisor walks you through every finding and explains your repair options clearly; no work begins until you approve it
- Repair and warranty – Most repairs can be completed during the same visit. All completed work is covered by the Nice Difference® Warranty: 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs last, valid at any Christian Brothers Automotive location nationwide
Replacing parts based on a code alone often fails to resolve the fault. Driving with active misfires or a flagged catalytic converter can cause secondary damage that significantly increases repair costs. Thorough diagnosis helps you avoid both outcomes.

FAQs
-
Q. "What is the difference between a steadily lit and a flashing check engine light?"A steadily lit light means that a sensor is sending a signal to your vehicle's computer that something is wrong or it could simply mean that the sensor is out. If your check engine light is flashing, however, that means there is a serious issue and you should stop driving immediately.
-
Q. "Why is my check engine light on but nothing seems to be wrong with my vehicle?"If nothing within your vehicle stands out, then it is possible that it is just a minor issue such as a loose gas cap or a bad O2 sensor. It is still recommended to see a mechanic if the light doesn't disappear to check for any larger issues.
-
Q. "Do you offer a warranty?"As part of our Nice difference.® commitment to providing our customers the best auto service experience possible, we also offer a3-year/36,000-mile warranty on all the work that we do. We offer this warranty at every Christian Brothers Automotive nationwide, and it will be honored at any location, regardless of which branch did the initial work.
-
Q. "Can you provide service under my extended warranty?"Yes. At Christian Brothers Automotive, we work with all major extended warranty providers to make needed repairs for our customers. If you have an extended warranty, you can discuss your carrier with our team when scheduling an appointment and confirm that the work will be covered. You can find a partial list of the extended warranty companies we work with here.
-
Q. "What to do if your check engine light turns on?"We recommend heading to your local auto shop as soon as you are able. This is typically a sign that there is an abnormality within your engine.
-
Q. "Is it safe to drive your car when the check engine light is on?"It depends. If you are experiencing other noticeable issues with your vehicle, it may be best to pull over. Otherwise, it is typically okay to drive to your local auto shop. You will want to get this checked sooner rather than later to avoid being stranded with a broken-down car.
