How We Diagnose & Repair Diesel Vehicles
A diesel concern may involve fuel delivery, turbocharger performance, engine controls, or diesel exhaust system components. Because several systems can cause similar symptoms, we use manufacturer-quality diagnostic equipment and documented inspection findings to assess the vehicle.
Here’s what to expect from our process:
- Inspect the vehicle: We evaluate the reported concern and test the relevant diesel systems based on the symptoms.
- Document the findings: Our Digital Vehicle Inspection provides a photo-based report, allowing you to see identified concerns instead of relying on a verbal description alone.
- Review and authorize the work: We explain our recommendations and provide an itemized quote before beginning repairs. You decide how to proceed.
1. Schedule Your Appointment
Whether scheduling online or over the phone be sure and let us know what you're experiencing so we can provide fast and accurate service advice.
2. Diagnostics and Inspections
Drop off your vehicle and the shop will get to work with inspections and diagnostics using the same equipment as the manufacturers to determine issues and next steps.
3. Digital Vehicle Inspection Report and Estimate
Following the diagnosis we will text you a digital vehicle inspection report, containing pictures and videos of our findings and recommendations.
4. Review and Approval
A service advisor will reach out to walk you through the findings and recommendations to determine how you would like to proceed, or you can approve work directly in your DVI.
5. Work Performed or Scheduled
Most work can be completed immediately, or scheduled based on parts and customer availability.
Diesel Service That Fits Your Schedule
You don’t have to put your entire day on hold while your diesel vehicle is being serviced. We offer complimentary shuttle service, WiFi, and coffee for a more convenient visit.
We also provide regular updates, so you know how the work is progressing. If our inspection uncovers another concern, we explain the finding and request your approval before moving forward.
Diesel Engine Warning Signs That Need Attention
Hard starts, rough idling, dark or excessive exhaust smoke, and a noticeable loss of power under load can signal a diesel engine problem. These symptoms may involve components that operate differently in diesel vehicles, including glow plugs, a high-pressure diesel fuel injection system, and the turbocharger.
Common reasons to arrange diesel diagnostics include:
- Extended cranking or difficulty starting, particularly when the engine is cold.
- Uneven idling, hesitation, unusual engine noise, or frequent stalling.
- Reduced acceleration, towing capacity, or power while climbing a grade.
- Dark, white, or excessive exhaust smoke during normal operation.
- Dashboard warnings related to the engine or diesel emissions system.
Prompt diagnosis may uncover a developing issue before continued driving leads to a more extensive repair. Testing is especially important when several diesel components could be causing the same symptom.
Diesel Fuel Injection Systems
Diesel fuel systems operate under high pressure and depend on clean, uncontaminated fuel. Contamination can damage injectors or the fuel pump, while delivery problems may cause hard starts, rough operation, or poor performance. Accurate testing distinguishes a fuel issue from an electrical or mechanical concern.
Turbochargers & Engine Power
Diesel engines commonly produce the low-speed torque needed for hauling and towing. The turbocharger contributes to that power by forcing additional air into the combustion process. However, a loss of power under load doesn’t automatically mean the turbocharger has failed. Diagnosis may also include airflow, fuel delivery, sensors, and engine controls.
Diesel Exhaust & Emissions Components
Modern diesel vehicles use computer-controlled exhaust and emissions components that require maintenance according to the manufacturer’s schedule. Diagnostic scan tools can retrieve fault information, but a code is only a starting point. Inspection and testing are necessary to identify what triggered the warning.
Maintenance for Older & Newer Diesel Engines
Older mechanically controlled engines and newer computer-controlled systems require different diagnostic approaches. Oil specifications, filter intervals, fuel system care, and emissions maintenance may also differ from gasoline vehicle requirements. Consult your owner’s manual for the maintenance schedule that applies to your engine and driving conditions.
