Full Service Diagnostic Testing
Reading a fault code is the starting point, not the answer. Modern vehicles store diagnostic trouble codes in the engine control module when a sensor or system falls outside expected parameters, but that code points to a circuit or system, not necessarily the failed part. A code flagging an oxygen sensor, for example, could reflect the sensor itself, a wiring issue, an exhaust leak, or a fuel trim problem.
Our check engine light diagnostics use manufacturer-quality equipment to retrieve stored codes and live data, then apply visual inspections and system-specific tests to confirm the root cause. The emissions control system, related sensors, and engine operation are all evaluated as part of that process. When we’re confident in the diagnosis, we present our findings and repair options to you clearly before anything is ordered or work begins.
Common Reasons a Check Engine Light Comes On
Hundreds of fault conditions can trigger the same warning light, which is why the specific cause can’t be determined without connecting to the vehicle’s OBD-II system and running follow-up tests. That said, some triggers come up more often than others.
Frequently diagnosed causes include:
- Loose or missing gas cap
- Faulty oxygen sensor
- Failing catalytic converter
- Worn spark plugs or ignition coils
- Malfunctioning mass airflow sensor
- Fuel system issues
The light itself gives you one more piece of information worth knowing. A steady check engine light means there’s a problem that should be serviced soon. A flashing check engine light signals an active engine misfire that can cause immediate damage to the catalytic converter. If your light is flashing, stop driving and get the vehicle to a shop right away.

What to Expect During Your Check Engine Light Service
If you’ve never had a check engine light diagnosed, here’s how the process works at Christian Brothers Automotive Jackson. There are no hidden steps and no decisions made without you.
Step 1: Code Retrieval & Live Data Review
We connect a scan tool to your vehicle’s OBD-II port to pull stored diagnostic trouble codes and live engine data from the engine control module. This tells us which systems flagged a problem and under what conditions.
Step 2: Inspection & Root-Cause Testing
The codes point us in a direction. From there, our ASE-certified technicians perform visual inspections and system-specific tests to confirm what actually failed. This is where check engine light diagnostics that go beyond basic ODB scanner codes make a real difference.
Step 3: Plain-Language Findings
Once we’ve confirmed the cause, we present our findings and repair options to you in clear language. You’ll know what the problem is, why it matters, and what addressing it involves. No work is authorized until you say so.
Step 4: Repair & Verification
After the approved repair is completed, the fault code is cleared and we verify the vehicle to confirm the warning light doesn’t return. All work is backed by the Nice Difference® Warranty covering 3 years/36,000 miles, whichever occurs last. If you have an extended warranty, let us know when you schedule and we can confirm coverage with your provider.

FAQs
-
Q. "What is the difference between a steadily lit and a flashing check engine light?"A steadily lit light means that a sensor is sending a signal to your vehicle's computer that something is wrong or it could simply mean that the sensor is out. If your check engine light is flashing, however, that means there is a serious issue and you should stop driving immediately.
-
Q. "Why is my check engine light on but nothing seems to be wrong with my vehicle?"If nothing within your vehicle stands out, then it is possible that it is just a minor issue such as a loose gas cap or a bad O2 sensor. It is still recommended to see a mechanic if the light doesn't disappear to check for any larger issues.
-
Q. "Do you offer a warranty?"As part of our Nice difference.® commitment to providing our customers the best auto service experience possible, we also offer a3-year/36,000-mile warranty on all the work that we do. We offer this warranty at every Christian Brothers Automotive nationwide, and it will be honored at any location, regardless of which branch did the initial work.
-
Q. "Can you provide service under my extended warranty?"Yes. At Christian Brothers Automotive, we work with all major extended warranty providers to make needed repairs for our customers. If you have an extended warranty, you can discuss your carrier with our team when scheduling an appointment and confirm that the work will be covered. You can find a partial list of the extended warranty companies we work with here.
-
Q. "What to do if your check engine light turns on?"We recommend heading to your local auto shop as soon as you are able. This is typically a sign that there is an abnormality within your engine.
-
Q. "Is it safe to drive your car when the check engine light is on?"It depends. If you are experiencing other noticeable issues with your vehicle, it may be best to pull over. Otherwise, it is typically okay to drive to your local auto shop. You will want to get this checked sooner rather than later to avoid being stranded with a broken-down car.
