What to Expect with a Check Engine Light Diagnostic Service
Our process is built around transparency and customer control at every step. Here’s how a check engine light diagnostic service works at Christian Brothers Automotive Hiram:
Step 1: Schedule
Contact us online or by phone and describe what you’re experiencing. Sharing details ahead of time helps our team prepare for accurate, efficient service.
Step 2: Diagnostics and Inspections
Our ASE-certified technicians use manufacturer-quality diagnostic equipment to inspect your vehicle’s systems, going well beyond OBD scanner codes to look for the underlying issue driving the warning.
Step 3: Digital Vehicle Inspection Report and Estimate
We send you a Digital Vehicle Inspection report by text with photos and videos of our findings and a clear estimate of recommended repairs.
Step 4: Review and Approval
A service advisor walks you through everything we found. No work begins until you understand the recommendation and give your approval.
Step 5: Work Performed or Scheduled
Most repairs can be completed during the same visit. If parts need to be ordered or scheduling around your availability makes more sense, we’ll find a time that works for you.
1. Schedule Your Appointment
Whether scheduling online or over the phone be sure and let us know what you're experiencing so we can provide fast and accurate service advice.
2. Diagnostics and Inspections
Drop off your vehicle and the shop will get to work with inspections and diagnostics using the same equipment as the manufacturers to determine issues and next steps.
3. Digital Vehicle Inspection Report and Estimate
Following the diagnosis we will text you a digital vehicle inspection report, containing pictures and videos of our findings and recommendations.
4. Review and Approval
A service advisor will reach out to walk you through the findings and recommendations to determine how you would like to proceed, or you can approve work directly in your DVI.
5. Work Performed or Scheduled
Most work can be completed immediately, or scheduled based on parts and customer availability.
Flashing vs. Solid Check Engine Light: What Each Means
Not all check engine lights carry the same urgency. Knowing the difference can help you decide how quickly to act.
Flashing Check Engine Light
A flashing check engine light signals a serious problem, often a cylinder misfire, that requires immediate attention. Continuing to drive risks severe and costly engine damage. Pull over safely and call us.
Solid Check Engine Light
A solid check engine light means your vehicle’s computer has detected an issue that should be addressed soon. Your vehicle may still be drivable to our shop, but the problem shouldn’t be put off.
Either state warrants Full Service Diagnostic Testing from a professional technician. A code reader alone won’t tell you what may need to be repaired.
Common Causes of a Check Engine Light
A check engine light can point to dozens of different conditions. Below are some of the most common triggers our technicians see from drivers in Hiram and the surrounding area.
- Loose or missing gas cap: One of the simplest causes. An unsealed cap triggers the evaporative emissions system and can set a code without any mechanical fault.
- Oxygen sensor failure: A malfunctioning O2 sensor affects fuel efficiency and emissions. The trouble code may point to the sensor while the actual problem is a wiring connector or exhaust leak nearby.
- Catalytic converter issues: A failing converter reduces performance, increases emissions output, and can cause a vehicle to fail emissions testing.
- Mass airflow (MAF) sensor problems: The MAF sensor monitors air entering the engine and helps determine the correct fuel mixture. A faulty sensor often causes rough idling, sluggish acceleration, and lower fuel economy.
- Spark plug or ignition coil failure: Misfires from worn plugs or failing coils trigger the check engine light, and if left unaddressed, can damage the catalytic converter.
- Transmission-related codes: The check engine light isn’t limited to engine problems. Transmission faults can trigger it too, and those warrant prompt attention.
Why Reading OBD Scanner Codes Isn’t a Diagnosis
A diagnostic trouble code identifies which system registered a malfunction. It doesn’t tell you which part failed or why. An oxygen sensor code, for example, could be triggered by the sensor itself, a wiring issue, an exhaust leak, or another sensor in the same circuit. Replacing the sensor based on the code alone often brings the light back because the actual root cause was never found.
Our technicians use manufacturer-quality diagnostic equipment to access live vehicle data alongside stored codes. That live data shows how systems are performing in real time, which is often where the real answer is found. Our team also reviews manufacturer-issued Technical Service Bulletins (TSBs) as part of the process. TSBs document known issues for specific vehicles and can surface causes that a code reader would never catch on its own.
This is what separates check engine light diagnostics at Christian Brothers Automotive Hiram from a quick scan at a parts store. We work to find what’s actually wrong so the repair can address the problem, not just the symptom.

FAQs
-
Q. "What is the difference between a steadily lit and a flashing check engine light?"A steadily lit light means that a sensor is sending a signal to your vehicle's computer that something is wrong or it could simply mean that the sensor is out. If your check engine light is flashing, however, that means there is a serious issue and you should stop driving immediately.
-
Q. "Why is my check engine light on but nothing seems to be wrong with my vehicle?"If nothing within your vehicle stands out, then it is possible that it is just a minor issue such as a loose gas cap or a bad O2 sensor. It is still recommended to see a mechanic if the light doesn't disappear to check for any larger issues.
-
Q. "Do you offer a warranty?"As part of our Nice difference.® commitment to providing our customers the best auto service experience possible, we also offer a3-year/36,000-mile warranty on all the work that we do. We offer this warranty at every Christian Brothers Automotive nationwide, and it will be honored at any location, regardless of which branch did the initial work.
-
Q. "Can you provide service under my extended warranty?"Yes. At Christian Brothers Automotive, we work with all major extended warranty providers to make needed repairs for our customers. If you have an extended warranty, you can discuss your carrier with our team when scheduling an appointment and confirm that the work will be covered. You can find a partial list of the extended warranty companies we work with here.
-
Q. "What to do if your check engine light turns on?"We recommend heading to your local auto shop as soon as you are able. This is typically a sign that there is an abnormality within your engine.
-
Q. "Is it safe to drive your car when the check engine light is on?"It depends. If you are experiencing other noticeable issues with your vehicle, it may be best to pull over. Otherwise, it is typically okay to drive to your local auto shop. You will want to get this checked sooner rather than later to avoid being stranded with a broken-down car.
