Every year in the state of Georgia you must submit your vehicle for an emission and maintenance inspection. The ASE-certified technicians at Christian Brothers Automotive are here to answer your emission test questions so that you’re prepared when it’s time to get your car or truck inspected.
Quick Facts about Georgia Vehicle Inspections
It’s good to know that there’s an easy exemption for new car owners. If your car is a 2015, 2014 or 2013 model and you’re renewing your registration on your car this year, it doesn’t have to be inspected! For everyone else though, the Georgia Vehicle Emission Inspection Test, or VIR for short, is required before you register your vehicle.
The Georgia DMV suggests that you get your inspection taken care of a couple of weeks prior to when your car’s registration expires. This way, you have some extra time to get any repairs done and get your car retested should it fail the test. Don’t worry if your car fails, once you have the necessary repairs done you can have your car retested at the same station free of charge.
How are Emissions Tested in Stockbridge, GA?
First, the technician will hook-up some equipment to your car or truck’s on-board computer to run the diagnostics report. This usually only takes five minutes to complete.
Second, the technician will manually inspect your gas cap. This is to make sure there’s a good seal and fuel is not leaking from it. Third, they will conduct a visual inspection of your catalytic converter to make sure it’s operating free of any interference. The catalytic converter is responsible for breaking down the harmful exhaust your car creates before it’s released into the atmosphere, so this last step is very important.
