How Our Check Engine Light Service Works
Our process is straightforward: we scan, explain, and repair. Our technicians connect your vehicle to manufacturer-recommended diagnostic equipment to read stored Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) and analyze live sensor data from the engine control unit (ECU). From there, we identify the root cause rather than just clearing the symptom. Once the diagnostic is complete, we explain what we found in plain language and present your options. No work starts until you’ve approved it.
1. Schedule Your Appointment
Whether scheduling online or over the phone be sure and let us know what you're experiencing so we can provide fast and accurate service advice.
2. Diagnostics and Inspections
Drop off your vehicle and the shop will get to work with inspections and diagnostics using the same equipment as the manufacturers to determine issues and next steps.
3. Digital Vehicle Inspection Report and Estimate
Following the diagnosis we will text you a digital vehicle inspection report, containing pictures and videos of our findings and recommendations.
4. Review and Approval
A service advisor will reach out to walk you through the findings and recommendations to determine how you would like to proceed, or you can approve work directly in your DVI.
5. Work Performed or Scheduled
Most work can be completed immediately, or scheduled based on parts and customer availability.
See Your Vehicle’s Condition for Yourself
Our free Digital Vehicle Inspection gives you actual photos taken during your vehicle’s service. You’ll see exactly what our technicians see. Every finding and recommendation is communicated in clear, understandable terms before we ask for your approval, so you can make an informed decision about your vehicle’s care.
Common Check Engine Light Causes in Arlington Vehicles
The check engine light can be triggered by dozens of faults across multiple vehicle systems. Some are minor. Others, if ignored, can lead to significantly more expensive repairs. These are among the most common causes our technicians encounter:
- Loose or damaged gas cap: Causes an evaporative emissions leak and is one of the most easily avoided triggers. Tighten the cap fully after every fill-up.
- Failing oxygen sensor: Disrupts the air-fuel ratio, reduces fuel efficiency, and puts additional strain on the catalytic converter over time.
- Catalytic converter failure: Often a downstream result of prolonged running rich or unaddressed misfires. Replacement is among the more costly repairs.
- Faulty spark plugs or ignition coils: Cause misfires and rough running. A flashing check engine light often points here first.
- Dirty or failed mass airflow sensor: Leads to hesitation, stalling, or poor fuel economy.
Arlington drivers should also know that a vehicle with an illuminated check engine light can fail the annual emissions inspection required in Tarrant County. An active fault code signals the emissions system isn’t functioning correctly, and the underlying issue must be resolved before the vehicle can be reinspected. Because vehicle systems are interconnected, one unaddressed fault can trigger secondary codes over time, making early diagnosis a good way to limit the scope of the repair.
Every visit to Christian Brothers Automotive Arlington includes a free Courtesy Inspection covering lights, brakes, suspension, tires, and battery. Schedule online or call (817) 623-5662 to get started.
Steady vs. Flashing Check Engine Light: What to Do
Not all check engine lights carry the same urgency. Knowing the difference helps you make a safe decision before you reach the shop.
A steady check engine light indicates a stored fault that needs diagnosis but isn’t an immediate emergency. The vehicle can typically be driven short distances while you arrange an appointment. Don’t put it off, though. An unresolved fault can trigger additional codes as connected systems are affected.
A flashing or blinking check engine light signals an active engine misfire. Continuing to drive risks damaging the catalytic converter, a significantly more expensive repair than addressing the misfire itself. If your light is flashing, stop safely as soon as possible and have the vehicle inspected promptly.
In either case, resetting the light without addressing the underlying fault can cause it to return. The stored Diagnostic Trouble Code must be resolved, not just cleared.
Maintenance Habits That Reduce Check Engine Light Occurrences
Following your manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule is a reliable way to reduce fault codes over time. Timely oil changes, spark plug replacement, and air filter service keep engine and emissions systems functioning as designed. Ensuring the fuel cap is fully tightened after every fill-up prevents one of the most common and easily avoided triggers.
Arlington’s heat and stop-and-go traffic place real stress on sensors, cooling components, and electrical systems. More frequent inspection intervals can catch heat-related degradation before it trips a fault code. Our free Courtesy Inspections are designed to surface developing issues early, before they become warning lights.

FAQs
-
Q. "What is the difference between a steadily lit and a flashing check engine light?"A steadily lit light means that a sensor is sending a signal to your vehicle's computer that something is wrong or it could simply mean that the sensor is out. If your check engine light is flashing, however, that means there is a serious issue and you should stop driving immediately.
-
Q. "Why is my check engine light on but nothing seems to be wrong with my vehicle?"If nothing within your vehicle stands out, then it is possible that it is just a minor issue such as a loose gas cap or a bad O2 sensor. It is still recommended to see a mechanic if the light doesn't disappear to check for any larger issues.
-

-
Q. "What to do if your check engine light turns on?"We recommend heading to your local auto shop as soon as you are able. This is typically a sign that there is an abnormality within your engine.
-
Q. "Is it safe to drive your car when the check engine light is on?"It depends. If you are experiencing other noticeable issues with your vehicle, it may be best to pull over. Otherwise, it is typically okay to drive to your local auto shop. You will want to get this checked sooner rather than later to avoid being stranded with a broken-down car.
