Frequently Asked Brake Service Questions
How Do I Know If I Need Brake Pads, Rotors, or Both?
Pads and rotors wear at different rates, so the answer isn’t always both. Most of the time, replacing the pads is enough. If you hear grinding or feel vibrations through the pedal, the rotors likely need attention as well. We inspect both on every visit and give you clear next steps based on what we actually find.
Is It Safe to Drive With the Brake Warning Light On?
No. When the brake warning light comes on, your braking system needs immediate inspection. Don’t drive farther than necessary. Schedule a checkup as soon as possible.
How Do I Know When to Schedule a Brake Inspection Without a Mandatory Annual Safety Inspection?
Texas eliminated the annual safety inspection requirement for non-commercial passenger vehicles on January 1, 2025, so there’s no longer a state-mandated checkpoint for your brakes. The best approach is to follow your vehicle’s recommended maintenance schedule, watch for warning signs like squealing, grinding, or a soft pedal, and plan on an inspection every 10,000 to 15,000 miles. Our team at Christian Brothers Automotive Rufe Snow can help you build a personalized brake maintenance schedule based on your driving habits and local conditions.
How Long Do Brake Pads Typically Last?
Most brake pads last between 25,000 and 70,000 miles, but that range depends heavily on your vehicle and how you drive. We’ll check your pads’ condition during the inspection and give you a more accurate estimate based on what we find.
Why Does My Brake Pedal Feel Soft or “Spongy”?
A spongy pedal is a safety concern, usually caused by air in the brake lines or a problem with the master cylinder. It requires an immediate professional inspection. Don’t wait on this one.
