How Our Check Engine Light Diagnostic Process Works
We keep you informed at every stage so there are no surprises when you pick up your vehicle. Here’s what to expect from drop-off to completion.
- Schedule Your Appointment: Book online or by phone at a time that works for you. Let us know your vehicle’s symptoms when you call. Our team can be ready.
- Diagnostics and Inspections: Our ASE-certified technicians connect manufacturer-quality equipment to your vehicle and perform a thorough mechanical and electronic investigation, not just a code pull.
- Digital Vehicle Inspection Report and Estimate: We text you a Digital Vehicle Inspection report with photos and videos of every finding, along with a clear estimate. You see exactly what we see.
- Review and Approval: Nothing moves forward without your go-ahead. Review the findings, ask questions, and approve only what you want done.
- Work Performed or Scheduled: Most repairs can be completed the same day. If parts or scheduling require a return visit, we’ll set that up before you leave.
1. Schedule Your Appointment
Whether scheduling online or over the phone be sure and let us know what you're experiencing so we can provide fast and accurate service advice.
2. Diagnostics and Inspections
Drop off your vehicle and the shop will get to work with inspections and diagnostics using the same equipment as the manufacturers to determine issues and next steps.
3. Digital Vehicle Inspection Report and Estimate
Following the diagnosis we will text you a digital vehicle inspection report, containing pictures and videos of our findings and recommendations.
4. Review and Approval
A service advisor will reach out to walk you through the findings and recommendations to determine how you would like to proceed, or you can approve work directly in your DVI.
5. Work Performed or Scheduled
Most work can be completed immediately, or scheduled based on parts and customer availability.
Why North Richland Hills Drivers Choose Christian Brothers Automotive Rufe Snow
A parts store can pull a stored fault code for free. What it can’t do is perform the mechanical and electronic testing needed to confirm what actually caused that code, or carry out the repair. Our Full Service Diagnostic Testing closes that gap with findings and documented proof.
Digital Vehicle Inspection Report
After diagnostics, we text you photos and videos of every finding before a single repair is authorized. You’re not asked to take our word for it.
Nice Difference Warranty
Qualifying repairs are covered for 3 years or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs last.
Extended Warranty Acceptance
We work with all major extended warranty providers. If you have coverage through your dealership or a third-party carrier, mention it when you schedule and we can handle the coordination.
On-Site Owner/Operators
Scott and Kelley Stidd are here every day, which means personal accountability on every vehicle that comes through our doors.
Complimentary Shuttle Service
Drop off your vehicle and get on with your day. You don’t have to wait at the shop.

Christian Brothers Automotive Rufe Snow is also RepairPal certified, an independent verification that our pricing and quality meet a recognized industry standard.
Understanding Your Check Engine Light
Your vehicle’s onboard diagnostic system monitors the engine, emissions, fuel delivery, and ignition systems continuously. When it detects a fault, it stores a diagnostic trouble code and turns on the check engine light. The light itself doesn’t tell you what’s wrong. That’s what the diagnostic process is for.
Flashing vs. Steady Check Engine Light
A flashing check engine light signals an active, serious fault such as a cylinder misfire. Continued driving risks damaging the catalytic converter and other components that carry significant repair costs. Pull over safely and arrange service. A steady light means a fault has been recorded but the condition isn’t immediately catastrophic. Prompt diagnosis is still the right call. The underlying problem won’t improve on its own, and waiting can reduce fuel efficiency in the meantime.
Common Causes of a Check Engine Light
Causes range from a loose gas cap and a failing oxygen sensor to worn spark plugs, a malfunctioning mass airflow sensor, or emissions system faults. The code points toward a system; our technicians determine the actual cause through further testing.
Ready to find out what your check engine light is telling you? Call (817) 835-7310 or schedule online. Christian Brothers Automotive Rufe Snow offers complimentary shuttle service and free after-hours key drop-off so your day doesn’t have to stop while we handle the diagnosis. What Full Service Diagnostic Testing Actually Involves
Retrieving OBD scanner codes is the starting point of a diagnosis, not the conclusion. A stored code identifies which system triggered the alert. It doesn’t confirm the root cause. A technician who stops at the code risks replacing a part that isn’t the actual problem, leaving the real fault in place.
Our check engine light diagnostics continue past the initial code retrieval. Using manufacturer-quality equipment, our technicians perform mechanical and electronic testing to verify the fault, rule out contributing causes, and determine the correct repair. Every finding is documented with photos and delivered in a Digital Vehicle Inspection report before any work is authorized.
Extended Warranties and Financing
Drivers who purchased an extended warranty through a dealership or third-party provider can often have covered repairs performed at an independent shop rather than returning to the dealer. Christian Brothers Automotive Rufe Snow works with all major extended warranty providers. Let us know your carrier when you schedule, and we can confirm coverage details before the work begins. Special financing is also available at this location for qualifying customers.

FAQs
-
Q. "What is the difference between a steadily lit and a flashing check engine light?"A steadily lit light means that a sensor is sending a signal to your vehicle's computer that something is wrong or it could simply mean that the sensor is out. If your check engine light is flashing, however, that means there is a serious issue and you should stop driving immediately.
-
Q. "Why is my check engine light on but nothing seems to be wrong with my vehicle?"If nothing within your vehicle stands out, then it is possible that it is just a minor issue such as a loose gas cap or a bad O2 sensor. It is still recommended to see a mechanic if the light doesn't disappear to check for any larger issues.
-
Q. "Do you offer a warranty?"As part of our Nice difference.® commitment to providing our customers the best auto service experience possible, we also offer a3-year/36,000-mile warranty on all the work that we do. We offer this warranty at every Christian Brothers Automotive nationwide, and it will be honored at any location, regardless of which branch did the initial work.
-
Q. "Can you provide service under my extended warranty?"Yes. At Christian Brothers Automotive, we work with all major extended warranty providers to make needed repairs for our customers. If you have an extended warranty, you can discuss your carrier with our team when scheduling an appointment and confirm that the work will be covered. You can find a partial list of the extended warranty companies we work with here.
-
Q. "What to do if your check engine light turns on?"We recommend heading to your local auto shop as soon as you are able. This is typically a sign that there is an abnormality within your engine.
-
Q. "Is it safe to drive your car when the check engine light is on?"It depends. If you are experiencing other noticeable issues with your vehicle, it may be best to pull over. Otherwise, it is typically okay to drive to your local auto shop. You will want to get this checked sooner rather than later to avoid being stranded with a broken-down car.
