Hydraulic vs. Electric Power Steering: What’s the Difference?
Understanding which system your vehicle uses helps clarify what kind of service it may need. Hydraulic power steering relies on a pump driven by the engine to pressurize fluid, which reduces the effort required to turn the wheels. The fluid in this system is what degrades over time and what a power steering fluid flush addresses.
Electric power steering (EPS) replaces the hydraulic pump with an electric motor and a set of sensors. EPS systems don’t use hydraulic fluid, so they don’t require a flush. But if the steering feel or response changes on an EPS-equipped vehicle, diagnostic attention is still needed to identify the cause.
