Brakes Before the Snow: 4 Signs Longmont Drivers Shouldn't Ignore

Brakes Before the Snow: 4 Signs Longmont Drivers Shouldn't Ignore

| By: Christian Brothers Automotive

Most people don't think about their brakes until something sounds wrong. On a dry fall afternoon, a set of worn pads can feel almost normal. The car still stops. The pedal still works. Nothing seems urgent.

Then the first real snow hits the Front Range, and the stop at the bottom of the hill on Hover St takes a little longer than it should.

Winter doesn't wear out your brakes overnight. It just stops hiding the problem. Here's what to watch for, and why now is the right time to have them looked at.

1. Squealing or Grinding When You Stop

Many brake pads have a small metal tab built in that squeals when the pad gets thin. It's designed to be annoying on purpose. If you hear it, your car is telling you it's time.

Grinding is more serious. It can mean the pad material is gone and metal is rubbing on metal, which can damage the rotors and turn a simple pad replacement into a bigger repair.

2. A Pulsing or Shaking Brake Pedal

If the pedal pulses under your foot or the steering wheel shakes when you brake, especially coming down from highway speed on Highway 119 or I-25, your rotors may be worn unevenly. It's not always the rotors, though, which is why we diagnose before we replace anything.

3. A Soft Pedal That Sinks Lower Than It Used To

A brake pedal should feel firm. If it feels spongy or travels closer to the floor than it used to, it can point to air or moisture in the brake fluid, or a leak somewhere in the system. That's one to have checked right away.

4. The Car Pulling to One Side When You Brake

If your car drifts left or right when you stop, one side may be doing more of the work than the other. On a dry road it's a nuisance. On ice, it can put you somewhere you don't want to be.

Why Winter Makes It Matter More

Stopping on packed snow or ice already takes longer than on dry pavement. Your tires and brakes need every bit of grip they can get. Thin pads, uneven rotors, or old fluid take away margin you'll want on the first slick morning.

Colorado's winter road treatments are also tough on brake parts. Over a long season, they can speed up corrosion on calipers, hardware, and brake lines. A look before winter, and again in the spring, catches problems while they're still small.

What Happens When You Bring Your Car In

Every service at our shop at 110 East Ken Pratt Blvd includes a free courtesy inspection, and that includes a visual brake check. The wheels stay on, but our techs, including our ASE-certified techs Tyler, Joe, and Alex, can still spot a lot: worn pads, scored rotors, leaks, and brake lines that have seen better days.

When the wheels do come off for a closer look, our techs measure exactly how much pad you have left with a brake pad gauge, so nobody has to guess.

Then we take photos. Through our Digital Vehicle Inspection (DVI), those photos and notes are texted straight to your phone. You see what we see, not just a line item on an invoice.

We'll walk you through what's urgent and what can wait. If your pads have plenty of life left, we'll tell you that, and you'll head into winter knowing where you stand. For bigger repairs, payment options are available. Just ask.

The "Longmont Factor"

Northern Colorado winters are a mix of everything: 60-degree afternoons, mornings in the teens, slush that freezes overnight, and canyon roads up toward Lyons and Estes Park that stay icy long after town has melted. A lot of our guests also commute to Boulder or down I-25 every day. That's a lot of stopping in a lot of different conditions, and your brakes handle all of it.

Diagnose First. Then Decide.

Not every noise means new brakes, and not every vibration means new rotors. Replacing parts until the problem goes away is expensive, and it's not how we work. Our techs find the real cause first, show you the photos, and let you make the call.
