Understanding your check engine light helps you respond confidently and have a more informed conversation with your technician.
What Your Check Engine Light Is Actually Telling You
The check engine light is triggered by sensors connected to the engine control module (ECM) through the vehicle’s OBD system. When a sensor reading falls outside normal parameters, the ECM stores a trouble code and illuminates the light. That code identifies the affected circuit or system but not necessarily the specific failed part. Pinpointing the root cause requires additional testing beyond pulling the code.
Solid vs. Flashing: A Critical Difference
A solid check engine light signals a non-emergency issue the vehicle’s computer has flagged. You can typically keep driving, but the vehicle should be diagnosed soon to help prevent a minor problem from becoming a costly one. A flashing check engine light is a different situation entirely. It indicates a serious active fault, such as a cylinder misfire, and continued driving can damage components like the catalytic converter. Pull over as soon as it’s safe to do so and arrange service right away.
Common Causes
Several issues account for the majority of check engine light triggers:
- Loose or faulty gas cap: Disrupts fuel system pressure and skews emissions readings, often the simplest fix.
- Faulty oxygen sensor: Reduces fuel efficiency and emissions performance over time.
- Failing catalytic converter: Often a downstream consequence of deferred maintenance.
- Failing mass airflow sensor: Throws off the fuel-air mixture, affecting power and efficiency.
- Spark plug or ignition coil issues: Cause misfires, rough idle, and reduced performance.
The check engine light can also illuminate with no drivability symptoms you’d notice. A sensor sending an out-of-range reading may not produce a feeling you’d detect behind the wheel, which is why diagnostic testing matters even when the car seems to drive fine.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is It Safe to Drive with the Check Engine Light On?
It depends on the light’s behavior. A solid light means you can usually drive short distances, but you shouldn’t ignore it. A flashing light means you should stop driving as soon as safely possible. If you notice any other symptoms (rough running, power loss, unusual smells), treat it as urgent regardless of how the light appears.
Can the Check Engine Light Come On with No Noticeable Problem?
Yes. A sensor can fail or send an out-of-range reading without producing any symptom you’d feel while driving. The vehicle’s computer detects the abnormality before it becomes obvious, which is why a prompt diagnostic is worthwhile even when everything seems normal.

FAQs
-
Q. "What is the difference between a steadily lit and a flashing check engine light?"A steadily lit light means that a sensor is sending a signal to your vehicle's computer that something is wrong or it could simply mean that the sensor is out. If your check engine light is flashing, however, that means there is a serious issue and you should stop driving immediately.
-
Q. "Why is my check engine light on but nothing seems to be wrong with my vehicle?"If nothing within your vehicle stands out, then it is possible that it is just a minor issue such as a loose gas cap or a bad O2 sensor. It is still recommended to see a mechanic if the light doesn't disappear to check for any larger issues.
-
Q. "Do you offer a warranty?"As part of our Nice difference.® commitment to providing our customers the best auto service experience possible, we also offer a3-year/36,000-mile warranty on all the work that we do. If you have an extended warranty, you can discuss your carrier with our team when scheduling an appointment and confirm that the work will be covered. -
Q. "What to do if your check engine light turns on?"We recommend heading to your local auto shop as soon as you are able. This is typically a sign that there is an abnormality within your engine.
-
Q. "Is it safe to drive your car when the check engine light is on?"It depends. If you are experiencing other noticeable issues with your vehicle, it may be best to pull over. Otherwise, it is typically okay to drive to your local auto shop. You will want to get this checked sooner rather than later to avoid being stranded with a broken-down car.
