Cold weather can take quite a toll on your vehicle. With the winter traveling season peak quickly approaching, have your car inspected to make sure it’s ready to go the distance and safely get you to your destination. There are a few maintenance items that are essential to making sure your vehicle stands up against the elements. Today, our ASE-certified technicians will answer the question, “how can I increase my vehicle’s performance in winter weather?”
Make sure your brakes are in good condition.
There’s nothing quite as important as your ability to brake easily and at moment’s notice on slippery, wet roads. We highly recommend you have your brakes checked out immediately if you hear any squeaking or grinding noises while braking. Needing to push the brake pedal all the way down to normally decelerate is another sign you should get your brakes checked.
Prepare your tires for cold, wet weather.
You also need to make sure your tires are in good condition during the winter. Tires need at least 1/8 of an inch of tread to be safe for driving on snowy or slushy road. Deeper grooves on your tires make it much easier to maneuver through snow and grip slippery, icy roads.
Tire pressure is key during the winter since the air is thinner. The air condenses, leaving your tires slightly flatter. To counteract this, you’ll need to add more air to your tires to ensure they are kept at the correct psi.
Test your battery’s strength.
Many people experience trouble starting their car on cold winter mornings. If you are one of those people, it may be because of a weak battery. Cold weather is hard on batteries, lowering their capacity for holding a charge and making it take longer for the battery to recharge as you drive. All batteries eventually die. If your battery dies unexpectedly, you may be late for work or even stranded in the winter storm. If your battery is exhibiting any weak behavior, it’s best to replace it before it ruins your day!
