Change your oil regularly.
One of the great secrets to protecting your car is changing the oil regularly and consistently. For decades, changing the oil every 3,000 miles, or every 3 months was the golden rule. However, this isn’t always the case. Since car technology has advanced quite a bit, you may be able to follow a different schedule. In fact, depending on the vehicle you own, an oil change may not be necessary but every 5,000 or even 10,000 miles.
Check your oil quality.
Keeping track of when your next oil change is may not always be easy. However, there’s an easy way to figure out if it is time: pop open the hood and check it. Just find the engine oil dipstick, pull it out and inspect the oil.
On the dipstick, the oil should come up to the “full” mark at all times, but never over it. Afterward, you’ll want to check the color and feel the texture of the oil. Oil that is very dark or feels grimy is in need of changing as soon as possible.
Consult your owner’s manual.
For help understanding exactly what your car needs and when it needs it, there’s no better place to check than the owner’s manual. The manual will specify the type of oil your car needs and when to replace it.
