4 Reasons Not to Worry

When worry weighs you down, remember these truths.

Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night with your mind suddenly flooded with anxieties (whether rational or not)? Or maybe you have hit the snooze button too many times and suddenly worry you will be late for work. You worry your health condition is cancerous before you see the doctor. You worry if your child will ever make the right decisions. You worry you are a failure as a parent, spouse, employee or friend. Does the worry ever stop?

Worry may be the most common sin. It makes you miserable and can sometimes adversely impact those around you. But God can forgive you and help you to overcome it.

Matthew 6:25-34 is a great passage to reflect on regarding worry. Christ says three times “do not be anxious” but does not stop there. Jesus wants more than to just hand out commands. He wants to get to our hearts, so he gives us reasons why we should not be anxious. Here are seven.

Life is too important to worry about thing that you eat, drink, and wear. It’s just that our priorities may be out of whack. What is most important in this life? Having good things like fancy clothes and eating at expensive restaurants or only organic, non-GMO food goes into our bodies (there is nothing wrong with this but if it isn’t attainable for your financial life, the point is you do not need to worry or stress about it)? We live in an age where people worry about having the best. Remember that life is about more than food and the body more than clothing.

We are valuable to God. We insult God when we worry about things like money and food and clothes as well as ourselves. Worry tells the world that we are of little value to God – that he would not care enough to take care of us - but as the hymn says:

The birds without garner or storehouse are fed;
From them let us learn to trust God for our bread.
His saints, what is fitting shall ne’er be denied
So long as ‘tis written, “The Lord will provide.”

God cares for the birds. He cares for you even more.

Worrying does not do any good. Have you ever looked back on a time you worried and though “I never would have made it through if I had not worried?” Worrying will not add a single minute to your life and it will not turn around any situation. There has never been a moment that someone was on their deathbed and a doctor said, “All we have left to do is worry.” Worrying will not get the car payment in and nobody ever added an hour to their life by worrying.

Tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for today is the grace for today’s trials. We are not able to store up grace for the future. When tomorrow’s trials come, God will give mercy for that day. God only gives grace when we need it. If you worry about something that could happen but it hasn’t happened, God isn’t going to give grace for it.
