Increase Vehicle Performance in Winter

CBAC Springfield Vehicle PerformanceThere’s no denying cold weather is harder on your vehicle. With the rapid approach of the winter season, it never hurts to make sure your car is ready to make the journey and get you safely to your destination. A few maintenance items are absolutely crucial to maintaining vehicle performance. Today, our ASE-certified technicians will answer the question, “how can I increase my vehicle’s performance in winter weather?”

Make sure your brakes are in good condition.

Your brakes are the most important safety feature on your vehicle. Especially in winter, you need the ability to brake and come to a full stop with short notice on wet roads. We highly recommend having your brakes checked if you are experiencing any squeaking or grinding noises while braking. Another sign of brake damage is needing to push all the way down on the brake pedal when trying to slow down normally.

Prepare your tires for cold, wet weather.

Your car tires also need to be in good condition for winter. Tires need at least 1/8 of an inch tread to be safe while driving on in snowy or slushy road conditions. Having deeper grooves on your tires will also help you as you drive through snow and grip slick, icy roads.

Another tire issue is the pressure. During the winter you may think your tires are leaking air, but in actuality the air inside them has condensed. To keep your tires ready to go throughout the winter, you should add more air periodically to make sure they’re inflated to the correct psi.

Test your battery’s strength.

If your car won’t start without a fight in the morning, you’re not alone. Cold weather regularly takes a toll on car batteries. The lower temperatures diminish the battery’s capacity to hold a charge and increase the time needed to recharge as you drive. All batteries will eventually die. Many people end up either late to work or stranded during the winter. If your battery is showing signs of weakness, have it replaced before it ruins your day!
