Cold weather can be very tough on your vehicle, especially if you’ve taken no steps to winterize it. Your engine must work harder during the winter and traction is significantly reduced on wet, slushy roads. The good news is there are several things you can do to help your car or truck survive the cold season.
Our helpful technicians at Christian Brothers Automotive Concord have expert advice to share what precautions you should take with your car or truck for the harsher, winter road conditions.
Check Your Car Battery
Because your engine has to work harder in cold weather, it places greater stress on the battery. The low temperatures will also lower its capacity. Before the cold weather sets in, it’s a good idea to have a thorough inspection of the battery, terminals, cables and fluids will help you determine if your battery is still in good condition.
If you pop the hood of your vehicle, you can see if the battery cables and connections are loose. It’s important to make sure there are no cracks or breaks in the cables and the terminals should fit snugly. Check the manufacturer’s date on the battery as well. This will help you determine if you might need a replacement battery.
Inflate Your Tires
If you’ve experienced driving in the cold, you know that adding extra air in the tires is a must. The air in your tires compresses when the temperature drops, causing tires to become flat. It’s necessary to keep the tires properly inflated or you won’t have sufficient traction to handle the wet or icy roads and no one wants a flat in that type of weather.
Defroster and Heater
Moisture from inside the car condenses on the glass as the inside temperature becomes warmer, leaving a layer of fog on your windshield and you with lowered visibility. It’s the same effect produced with water vapor from your own breath or the heater. A functional defroster blows warm, dry air on the windshield to remove this condensation.
The defroster is regulated by the AC system. If your AC system isn’t functioning, it could be because of a faulty heater coil. Getting it fixed is definitely worth it when you have to head out for a morning commute.
